i have been playing my brownbird 12 string almost non stop since i posted about it at 10:30 am. that happens almost every time i take it out which isn't nearly as often as i would like to. it is so great to play i would use it for gigs once in awhile if i wasn't aware of it's uniqueness. since it' the only one, what would you do if it was yours? keep it mint or play it so you and others could enjoy it knowing that a gig guitar is at risk? am i just saving it for some future guy to gig with?

i'm taking it tonight and will keep it in it's case between sets. am i being bad?

Play it out. Otherwise it's like buying a Porsche and taking it out only to wash it.

Don't park your Porsche in the airport lot, but definitely drive it to dinner at Maxim's. It's all about balancing risk with reward.

Bob's right. I won't take one of my better guitars up to the mountains or to the beach. For those trips, I've got an old Baladeer. But to gig, I'll take one of the good guitars. I'll be careful, and keep it on a stand, but I don't want a guitar that can't go out of the house (actually, I have one -- 1914 Martin 0018, but that's not a gigging guitar anyway).

I think it is OK to take a guitar like that on a gig once in a while but keep a close eye on it. If you take it often someone will target it and it will possibly disappear if they can distract you. If you gig with it occasionally it will give you a chance to enjoy why it is so great a guitar that playing at home can't provide. Go for it but take every precaution.

A guitar is built to be played.
Ovations ESPECIALLY were designed/built for working musicians.
I'll periodically take the SlotHead out on gigs, but only when I know that I can ensure that conditions are safe.

What's the sense of HAVING it, when you can't "whip it out in public" every once in a while"? . . . . ;)

i played the brownbird last night, and i must admit there was something special in the mix. we either had a really good crowd or they felt it too. i kept it in it's case between sets and it now resides in the working stack of my guitars. i think i will use it carefully for gigs, and allot more at home. the active pickups are so hot i ran at about 1/2 of the vol. settings i normally use. all in all, you guys all said what i wanted to hear and do anyway. just had to clear it with the "board of directors" gracias!

I usually take a Bluebird or whatever suits, out when ever I play...which isn't on a regular basis these days. But I do take extra cautions to make sure nothing happens to them.

Russ, the twelve-string is active like yours but the six-strings are passive. All are Viper shaped with the poly over aluminum frame.
