First and foremost I would like to say hello, I have been lurking for some time now and just want to say this is a great site with lots of information.

I have a mid to late 60's Preacher Deluxe, I am not sure of the age (I bought it used) and the neck mounting plate is missing. (that's why I don't know the year) The guitar still plays fine but I would really like to have the plate.

It is a black Preacher Deluxe 1283 with gold hardware, aside from the plate missing it is in excellent condition. I e-mailed the mothership for a new plate but was told they do not stock them any more. Does anybody have any ideas as to where I can get one?

Thanks in advance

John

Let me bounce this up the chain so somebody will see it. Don't know about the plate. There are a couple of people here with all kinds of old parts tho'.

Your guitar would be a mid to late 80's guitar, not '60's. A great guitar tho'.

Moody,

Thanks for the bounce sometimes when your new it's not cool to always top your post so thanks.

How do you know what year my preacher is (or is not) by the color? all the information you can give me to help me determine it's age would be great. It has the gold plated hardware and abalone fret markers, ivory bound and white edge on the black pick guard as well as a black bridge cover.

It is a very sweet sounding axe and I am amazed at how many different sounds you can get out of it just by flipping and sliding switches around.

If anyone else has any information on how I can find a gold neck plate I would appreciate it. I fear that if I can't find one here I may never.

John, the serial number which would identify the year your guitar was built, would have been stamped on plate that you're missing. There's a chance that it might also have been written under the neck block, but you'd have to remove the neck to find out.

Have you written to Miles yet about a new plate?

The preecheurs were only made from around 77 to 82 so it was easy to say there's no way it was from the 60's. The preachaur deluxes were not made the first couple of years so that narrows it further.

Yep, I e-mailed Miles and he is looking for one. I hope he finds one or this could turn out to be quite an adventure. Oh well at least it gives me something to do!

Thanks for the help trying to find a year to my Preacher I can see how everybody is confused. I read my first post and it says late 60's I meant to say late 70's

The guy I bought it from said his brother bought it in 1978 but who knows for sure. I paid $65.00 for it at a garage sale. I did not realize the plate was missing until I got it home. For that price I was not going to stick around. All I needed to do is put new strings on it and play!

It did have one other problem maybe someone can help me with as well. The guitar had been sitting in the case for some time and the case (and guitar) smelled like it had been sitting in a basement for 20 years!! I got the guitar cleaned up (the plastic pickguard held most of the smell) but how do I get the smell out of the case.

It's been almost two years since I bought it and after trying everything I know, the case still smells like mildew.

Any suggestions???

John

Bump

Still have fingers crossed that someone may have a gold neck plate for my preacher. Miles has a chrome one but I sure would like a gold one.

Any suggestions on how to get that mildew smell out of the case?

I can do the mildew thing!

Distilled vinegar and warm water- don't soak just dampen and rub. Lots of air to dry out. Repeat as needed. Probably good annual practice as well.

Add to the above to let the case dry out in the sun... SOmething about direct sunlight kills the germs and such.

Thanks for the suggestions on cleaning the case. Will the smell be more prone to come back or will it be gone forever. I keep all of my cases in a well regulated (temp. & humidity) room.

It seems that when I did clean it in the past it would smell good for a while (day or two) then it would come back.

Mwoody, I will try your method and hope it works, but here in Illinois it's cold so no outside drying for a few months. I will try in the spring.

One last question about the neck plate for those in the know. Will any other neck plate fit from another Ovation solid body? It might be easier to find something that way. Were the hole patterns the same?

Thanks,

BigJ

After you've cleaned it, throw a sachet or two of baking soda in there (and change 'em regularly). Might help to absorb to of the odor . .

I always thought the UKII ones were a little smaller, but I guess not. Just an optical illusion becuase they are counter-sunk. Gold neckplates were only on the UKII and Preacher Deluxe I think.
