My main stage guitar is a 1989 elite with the op 24 system...basic but it works just fine...my partner just traded in his old Gibson for a new breedlove with a combination pizeo/ mic blend system....wow!!! makes my poor Ovation sound like a K-Mart First Act...Well I'm sorry but I love my Ovation....It is me....has never failed me...looks cool...neck is solid as a rock...and all the other plus's we have all come to know and love....well, I'm tired of all these Taylor and Breedlove solid wood guitar snobs looking at my Ovation and dismissing it as a joke....So...I was wondering...can I tinker with the electronics and maybe add a mike to the pre-amp via a Y connector or something?...any thoughts?...I refuse to give up and give in...thanks ..rick

Hello Rick,
Maybe it's just time to upgrade. I'm sure that the electronics have evolved in the last 15 years. You would be just in time to take advatage of the new LX upgrades. Get what you can for old faithful on E-bay to soften the blow to the wallet. (That is if you can bring youself to part with it.)

I had called the mothership, shortly after getting my Elite, regarding upgrading the electronics. According to them, I could send it in and they'd put whatever I wanted in it...for a fee. As I recall, it was somewhere around $300 to get the OP24+ (if that's the one with the tuner) or maybe that was for the OPX. Can't remember now.

At any rate, call them and ask for pricing. I don't know how much a Breedlove is, but I'm sure it's more than $300 or so. And it wouldn't have the cherished five piece neck. ;)

Hi Rick:
I assume that your Elite is a super shallow model and therefore adding a transducer mic would not give you the quality of sound that the high-end wood guitars get with a "blender" system. Feedback would also be a problem and would require a lot of trial and error on the mic placement within the guitar body.
I tend to agree with Slipkid. The time and cost of attempting to upgrade your Elite combined with the reality that it just may not be possible to make your Elite sound much better than it already does, mitigate towards getting a guitar with more modern electronics. On the good side, a nice 1868 Elite usually fetches at least $450 on eBay and many times a lot more depending on the acutal condition.

Depending upon how much "moving around" you do (or don't do) at gigs, you might be best served by augmenting your guitar's sound with a good stage mic . . .

i set the action for a guy who had given up on a rainbird. he is more interested in guitars as an object and not too much for playing. when i was finished he said to keep it for a year and to use it for gigs or anything i wanted to. it has a fishman piezo/ mic combo. i have been unable to control the feedback for the mic, and the body is so sensitive to outside noise. i suspect because it is so thin, that i gave up on it after a couple trys as a gig guitar. it would be interesting to see how a breedlove reacted in our bands/stage situations. i am happy with my elite standard for rejecting noise from the rear,(bowl shape?) and i probably will keep using it for my acoustic needs live until i find an upgrade O elite.

Hey, I have a Breedlove 12-string I'm getting ready to sell......

I've decided to keep my 1974 Glen Campbell 12-string and let my Breedlove go. The Breedlove has a LOT deeper tone, but the high just aren't there! The O has even sound with all 12 strings. And it has far better action than the Breedlove.

Ask your Breedlove friend if he's looking for a Breedlove 12-string MJ/E from 1993. I'll stick with my long time friend.

rick, it's your skills that count. if you can't "win" with your 1989 elite, which is a pretty good guitar, i doubt you can "win" with a 2004 elite lx. it's impossible for any breedlove to be that much better than any properly set-up elite. it could be psychological issue only.

btw, not every breedlove is expensive. you can get a brand new, solid wood top breedlove for around $250!!! look at their entry level atlas series. some ovation seem to be over-priced compared to breedlove atlas series.
