However, his starting price, approx. $2040 U.S. dollars, is nearly $150 over the original list price! A mint condition 2002 collectors went for $863 last week. In fact, there's another 2002 Collectors on ebay, mint (?), with a starting bid of $799. And Al's got a 2002 for $850. I'll bet he doesn't get it. Just my observation.

We'd all like to think that the Ovation collectors are going to increase in value over time. In Kaman's interview with Tim Kummer, Tim states that limited editions and collectors series rarely increase in value more than the standard releases.

On the other hand, this has been on eBay twice already, the first time with a starting bid of C$3500. I was rooting for a buy at that price, believe me! What I do know is that I would not sell mine for what the market would offer. Which is probably somewhere around $750. Mr. Kummer, I'm afraid, is right. Welcome Harald from a fellow Bay Area folk. Let's get together and noodle some music. I can show you the three chords Moody taught me.

I find it really, really interesting that cheaper Ovations hold a higher percentage of their original price than the more expensive ones! People sell used Celebrities at nearly 50% of their original value, where more expensive ones can drop to 40% or even 30%! Damn shame. If I knew three weeks ago what I know now I would have snatched up a Legend on craigslist for $450. I think this is primarily due to the nature of Ebay buyers. Most do not want to spend over a $1000. Often they will WAY over pay for a cheaper item! I am, alas, a beginner guitarist. I 'played' piano when I was younger but did not have the patience to practice scales, etc. so all I ever learned to do was 'play' a few songs. 4 weeks ago I was tuning my 2 year old's toy guitar (don't laugh!) and found that it was interesting to play. I have always been mystified by the fret board (there are no white and black keys, for goodness sake!) but I have really developed a fondness for it. Its so cool that you can go up and down AND sideways! So I'm working on scales around the dreaded Circle of 5ths. Theory has suddenly come alive for me and I find the fretboard space very appealing. I'm trying to find a way to buy an Ovation USA for the budget my wife thinks is appropriate for a newbie guitarist. I might have to wait until I 'prove' my dedication to the art. I am literaly STILL playing my son's guitar (Ok, you can laugh now.) So, learning the mystical 3 chords that Moody has apparently passed down to many OFC members would be a step up for me! Still, I would like to start playing music with others. I just got to get a guitar that won't make everyone laugh so hard that they can't play! jim "I spend half my money on weed, women and whisky. The other half I spend foolishly." - a quote from another board.

Most of the Ovations are still mid-priced as new. Their playing quality is high but when you can get an LX for $950-$1,050...lots of others out there over $2,000 or more. So, even a used Celeb at $300-350 is a good deal and probably not that much of a discount from what the seller bought it for. Also, a lot more potential buyers in the less than $500 market than in the $1,000 plus. And, IMHO the less than $500 market is going more for looks than quality. I have a Turser 3" box that I can sell for twice what I paid for it and it is about 16 months old. I can't sell one of the Ovations I bought new for twice what I paid.

I have an opportunity to make an offer for this guitar and not really sure what a fair offer really is. Do you all think $750 is indeed a fair price? Thanks guys - appreciate your experience on this one! Dano
