Question 1. Did Elvis Presley ever write a song? Not that he needed to but did he write one and record it?
Question 2. Who wrote and did Love potion #9? Not that I really care but I do need the answer and don't know it.

Location: Central Florida | Not sure about the Elvis question, but Love Potion #9 was done by a couple of different artists, the most famous version was done by the Searchers, circa 1964 / 65.

Elvis Facts
discusses the publishing, recordings and such but there is no specific on a song written soley by the King. I would venture the answer is "No".
Another option is to log onto an Elvis Fan Site, ask the obviously ignored and debatable question "Did Elvis really write anything?" and get your !$$ kicked! |

Location: Scotland | I just emailed my buddy in Nashville, who is not only a big Elvis fan, but back in the day actually took a shit in Elvis's house. He says that around 1961 Elvis wanted to record Cole Porters "Begin The Beguine" but couldn't secure copyright clearance. The song was re-written & recorded as "You'll Be Gone" with Elvis given a co-writing credit with 2 other guys. Apparantly it's one of the very few songs for which he had a writing credit. Though whether he actually wrote any of it is debatable.

Question In all sincerity and with no disrespect intended the question that has been passing amongst my friends is "Did Elvis write any of the songs he recorded?".
Separate of course from those that were co-written or developed or re-arranged. I think this question has stirred controversy and emotions over who-helped-who.

I had the pleasure, or at least the experience, of being in Virginia when Elvis appeared on the scene in the 50's, every where you went this kid was crooning over the airways and replacing real country music with things like "Teddy Bear" and "Heartbreak Hotel", and all the hot Virginia beauties were boogying to "Blue Suede Shoes" and us hillbillies were trying to learn those rockabilly guitar licks without much success as it was greek to us, especially right on the heels of "The Magic Touch" and the "Great Pretender" and, what was worse, " Sh Boom, Sh Boom". I sold my guitar and went to drinkin' moonshine and racing a '37 Ford stock car which broke down the first day on the track, leaving me with my '32 Ford claimer that the Williamsberg, VA police arrested me for driving on the street with no lights, no mufflers, no registration, and no RADIO, the radio a felony in Virginia. My '32 is probably still setting in a Williamsburg junk yard.
Elvis was just a flash in the pan in the Virginia deep woods where moonshine was made. They liked Mac Wiseman who appeared at the Old Dominion Barn Dance in Richmond, as did the Stanleys and Carters.

Last I heard Mac Wiseman was still around, saw him on some country concert not long ago. He was on a CD called "Mac Doc and Del" with Doc Watson and the Del McCoury Band with some great songs on it. |
