I spent this Friday and Saturday at the Christian Musician Summit in Tacoma. Sponsored by Christian Musician/Worship Musician magazine with contributors from all over the industry. It was inspirational and educational to say the least. There were classes such as Roby Duke on alternative tunings (just explore!), Steve Merkel on Songwriting and many more extremely talented Artists instructing on every aspect for Musicians and those that support them.

A “Masters” series put on by Doyle Dykes and Phil Keaggy! Watching these guys you wonder how you call yourself a guitar player and yet, they inspired me to be that musician. Now I know what the other 15 or so frets are for!

So many talented people that were there to provide inspiration and tools for those that are called to use them. Instruction and exhibitors by day with an awesome concert each night. This was the best two day Worship Service I have ever been in!

Here’s a link to the site:

Although Ovation was listed as an Exhibitor early on that didn't come together. But that's another story.

I did have opportunity to strike up some conversations and hand out some OFC picks with sales and attendees.

Sounds like a great seminar, and certainly superb leadership was present.

The problem with using many alternative tunings and some of the things that a Master's Class might teach in a live worship setting is having the quality of musicians who can play in support. Many churches are blessed with excellent musicians, but many are not quite so blessed.

There has been a tremendous explosion in recent years of high quality worship music from around the globe (I am listening to the Parachute Band from New Zealand as I write). The resources are out there if the players can be found. And.... if your church is ready for it.

Doyle Dykes and Phil Keaggy together, I'm sure it was a treat.

I first heard Doyle when he was in Australia on a clinic tour for Taylor some months ago. What a picker !

I bought a great CD that night. It was called "Songs Of Faith and Freedom", a selection of old hymns and traditional songs. I spolke to him after the clinic and he was a thorough gentleman.

Ovation could do with an endorsee or two like him.

Doyle was totally awesome, entertaining and sincere in his faith.

He also mentioned his Custom "Doyle Dykes" Taylor line they had made for him two or three or four times (click)!

I think Doyle lives here in Jacksonville and is pretty locked in with Taylor.

This next is meant as a serious question.
Does anyone know if Bob Taylor is into the Christian movement? I have no idea but would guess yes if I had to. There seems to be a lot of Christian Taylor endorsees.

I followed Tony's link to the Taylor site and started looking at the prices. Talk about perceived value vs. actual value! It's incredible what they are charging for their guitars. Nothing under a grand. Quite a few between $2-$3000, and all the way up to about $12,000.

Yet, I've never played one that made me want to buy it. I've played them against Ovations that cost a third of the price and felt the Ovations sounded and played better.

I'm not telling people who play Taylors that they are wrong. They just don't do anything for me.

Yeah, I'd say Tony's link was pretty conclusive, as to Bob's religious leanings.
And, Paul, I agree. A trifle much, for my taste (and pocketbook).

When I was involved with wholesaling Taylors some years ago, Bob Taylor did tell me he played in church.

The early years of Taylor brought back some memories, I had seen Taylor at many of the folk and bluegrass soirees in San Diego in the 70's, too bad he didn't show any of the musicians from that era, fiddle player Stuart Duncan was a regular at most sessions and now has been an instrumental player of the year in some country music awards. I vaguely recall Stelling and Deering from some of the press coverage at that time, the other talented Allison, Allison Brown, who is still touring playing banjo and fiddle was a regular winner of contests in San Diego at that time along with Suart Duncan. There was a great bluegrass band called "Pacifically Bluegrass", that played every festival, and whose fiddle player and high harmony singer, was a hare lipped janitor from my son Charlie's school, that impressed Charlie greatly when he saw his janitor playing and singing some great bluegrass. Stuart Duncan worked with them too when he was 13 years old.
