I was scrolling through the on-line inventory of The 12th Fret, a Toronto music store that sells a lot of high-end acoustics, including a lot of "boutique" guitars. It seems everything they get in stock with Brazilian backs and sides is almost immediately slapped with a "sold" sticker. Even the non-Brazilian stuff - "boutique" arch-top jazz guitars and such - go like hotcakes. The prices aren't listed, but you can tell from the descriptions that these things are $10K, or $25K, or up. I can only assume that most of them are being grabbed by collectors and speculators with money to burn. I hope at least a few of them are going to people who actually love to play the guitar and have dedicated themselves to learning the instrument.

These guys know there stuff, do incredible repair work, and are good to deal with. And like Duncan said, on any given day of the week - you have no idea what kind of wonderful you'll find in the store!! Check it out if you get a chance http://www.12fret.com/ :D

Lots of the 5 figure guitars go to Doctors and lawyers and other guitar fanatics (sometimes refered to as guitar homos). That end of the market is much larger than most people think.

I forgive W2 for his Miss Pellings because he was, after all, an Ergonomics major in College. Driving in Seattle (job related) yesterday and saw many high $$$ commuters, H2's and an H2 Stretch Limo. Go figure! Since I was the escort Vehicle for a Grove RT855 Mobile Crane it was nice to see the H2's that came along the Grove get a little reality check - as they looked like VW Bugs and had to actually share the road!!

That thing took up some major road room when on the highway. Brakes failed one time when going over the Organ Mountain pass between us and Las Cruces, I wasn't there but my operators said they had some near retirement experiences and there was some reports of the driver pulling on the steering wheel and shouting "WHOA you SOB" over and over before it finally coasted to a stop when it hit level ground at the bottom of the pass. It was such a cumbersome and had so much drag that it never got much over 55 MPH downhill before it ran out of steam. Passed a few old ladies, and one VW bus full of CA hippies. A road grader going the same way thought he was being challanged to a race and burned up his transmission on his Gov't issue vehicle, becoming the only victim when he was fired.

I have an excellent fund program, great stocks, but my guitars or more reliable and outperform them all. Also, keep in mind, that you can always PLAY the guitar and get payed for that too. I have said in the past, there are not too many items you can buy, play with and even make money with for 20+ years, then sell for more than you paid for it, or at least sell for even money.
