Today is Jim and Maury's 31st anniversary of their passing.

I listen to Jim often. Love his music, his voice and messages.

He is just one of the greats. An angel that just has a short visit in this world and leaves.

His music will live forever.

Serge

I don't know about everybody else, but I can remember where I was when I heard the news about Jim Croce. I didn't realize that today was the 31st anniversary of his death, but for some reason, this weekend, I pulled out a dvd I have of he and Maury doing a number of their tunes. While I really enjoyed the uptempo tunes, Time In A Bottle and I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song really hit home.

Next month my wife and I are going to San Diego for our anniversary and will be staying in the Gaslamp District, where his wife Ingrid has her restaurant. We'll be going by. I'll get a pic of Jim's Ovation.

31 years. Geez. Where does it go?

Caught part of a tribute on PBS. He played his Legend (see, I can learn) and another guitar. It was really great to see how natural he was at making music.

Very much missed and cut short.

It seems that a lot of the best guitar players/singer/songwriters checked out early. Very sad.
Kinda makes me glad I stink. Probably why I'm still here.

Serge Great Post!Croce like some other fabulous musicians went way before his time. I still do some of his tunes when performing live.
Some of his fun tunes were Roller Derby Queen and Workin at The Carwash Blues. He had so much good stuff, it's almost hard to pick a favorite wouldn't you say?

Remember very distinctly hearing "Operator" on the radio for the first time. Few if any songs have ever made the instant impression that one did. The guitar work on that record rang my bell in a big big way and the subject matter hit my lovesick high school heart dead center. Also remember where I was when I heard he had died. It can't have been that long ago. Add thiry some odd years to my life now and I'm likely to be taking my dirt nap.

Don't know about you but I cheered ME up.

Steve,

Yes man, I love them all.

The album "Life and Times" is a favorite, maybe because I really got into it learning all the guitar parts, but I love all the albums.

It's rare to find one singer songwriter that has so many good songs.

And Maury's lead guitar work is second to none.

"The hard way every time" is a masterpiece. I can go on and on about Jim.

Henry Gross ("Shannon") is a good friend of mine and has told me many stories about Jim. He played on the "I got a name" album and he is a superb songwriter and artist in his own right.

Serge ;)

Me, too, who is french, I'm a jim croce's fan, abd I discovered this songwriter when I lived in ..Korea, 15 years ago, when my daughter born. So, he is not so "famous" in France, as Dylan or Stevens, but for me, he was great!

Henry is also one of the greats.

He lives in Nashville and his main stage guitar is an Ovation Glen Campbell, and he has a bunch of Ovations in his collection.

Interesting that when a artist dies young, they are remember as always young and vibrant. There is no other mental picture and they will always live in our minds at their peak.

Serge:

Thanks for the link to Henry's webpage. I learned quite a bit and found out about Shannon (don't read stories like that when you're very tired -- you'll just start to cry).

Why don't you invite Henry to the board?

I saw Henry a BUNCH of years ago when he was a sideman on a James Taylor Tour . . .
He was a pretty astute guitarist . . quite good. JT had him do a couple of his own songs in the middle of the set.

Cliff I bet that was a great show.Henry's Shannon really sticks out in my mind as being a great song lyrically and the melody and harmonie were just awesome. Now some people hate the song because they thought it was sad and sappy. I disagree with that. It simply was a song that i remember hearing on the radio and liking.
In case anybody gets any ideas of singing that song at the OFC gathering in June, Make Sure Paulwag's Wife's Not There. Shannon is her name and I made the mistake of singing a few bars and I just knew by the look she gave...that she wanted to Kill Me. Seems they used to singthat song all the time to her in High School. I guess i could understand that...But Still...if several of us particiapate she could'nt kill all of us.
Could she??

h-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m . . . .

I dunno, Al . .

In light of recent developments, this sounds like something that could be easily misconstrued by the sensitivities of others as to be in bad taste and somewhat offensive . . .

Lemme confer with the Legal Dept. here (they're a little backed up, so it could take a few days) and I'll get back to you.

If it all works out, I'll send it to you via private e-mail . . .
