This has nothing to do with Ovations, but in the latest issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine, there's a great interview with JJ Cale. He speaks universal truth when he talks about how his bad back has necessitated him getting smaller and samller amps. His great line is

"My sound isn't no bigger than my back."

Man, I love that. And identify with it.

HA! I just finished reading that! Great article, even if the mag reads (to me) like one giant ad for Gruhn.

A friend of mine has his amp strapped to a dolly (the furnature moving kind). He's also got a pedal board strapped down to the top of the amp.

Wheels it in, unstraps the pedal board, sets it on the ground, plugs in (power & guitar) and he's good to go.

Now that's a great idea! I've got a friend that lugs alot of heavy equipment including amps.I've gotta tell him about it. It's liable to save at least some of his back pains.

At the last Factory Tour, I got a quick glimpse of a really cool handtruck that Al had in the back of his car. It folded up really flat and took up about as much space as a snow shovel.
Where'd ya get that, Al??

and, perhaps, pharmaceuticals. Just kidding there, AL.
I have recurrent spells with an L-5 disc, and I guarantee, there ain't enough of anything that rescues me from that misery.
However, related to this issue, I appear to be relatively safe- I have only a tiny Kustom practice amp to "play out" with, and the decibel levels are monitored, and STRICTLY enforced, by She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed.
Another issue, though- aren't tube amps comparatively heavier than solid-state types, to begin with? Risk management, for those of us in the OldFartsClub.

I have several criteria when buying sound equipment, including sound quality & price, but the most important factor is, can I be arsed to pick it up and carry it from the truck to the gig. If the answer is no then I look for something else, no matter how good it may sound

and me with one of the worst backs out there just ordered a roland vga 7. it's got wheels and i have a gig cart with pneumatic wheels. so all i need is someone to lift it on and off the rig. easy to do in macho, "i can lift anything" land.

my crate 65w with built in tunner and effects is a decent gig amp but the vga-7 has the cosm and 13 pin stuff. i love to switch to an open or altered tuning with a stomp, play a slide lead, and back again.

any plans for an ovation with a built in hexaphonic pickup?

luego amigos

Checked 'em out in Hollywood this time last year. 65/66 Blackface Deluxes are around 50% of the average asking price over here. That'll work for me, and they'll fit in a suitcase!

Russ, welcome back! The old Ovation Roland GK-equipped guitars are compatible with the Roland amp. Not easy to find, but not especially expensive if you do.

hi paul, didn't even know there was such a thing as a roland/ovation guitar. the outboard gk pickup gear is a bit wart like, but it works great. i have a black breadwinner that was painted and modified into ugliness that became a synth project guitar. actually its looks fits the sounds and the 2 octave neck is great. is looks good again with a few modifications. same radius as the gk2a pickup too. this 13 pin world is pretty interesting, especially blended with the magnetic pickups. do you fool around with this technology paul? i have the gr33, vg88v2 and a junction box so i can use either or both. i am just starting to understand midi enough that it makes me go crosseyed. are you bottling any PT electronics elixir you could send me??

off to the beach. i love the slow season here. no sunday gigs.

Russ, Ovation screwed around with hexaphonic sythn-access guitars on at least 3 occasions. The first was the Hammond Condor in the 60's, then there was the much under-rated (and at the time vastly superior to Roland) Shadow system. Then they made a bunch of "Roland Ready" GK2-equipped Ledgends and possibly one or 2 other models.

I've been a guitar synth user for 20-odd years, mostly because I'm a useless keyboard player rather than having any great affinity for guitar synth technology. I have a Breadwinner fitted with a GK2A into a Roland GR33 and it's OK, but that's all. I use it in the studio for strings, brass, organ, right-hand piano, that kind of stuff

Glad to see you made it back Russ! The thing with Roland, Ovation was the acoustic and Fender was the electric.
Take it easy padner.
