I need advice. I'm contemplating getting in line for one of the LX Elites. In looking at the 1778 vs. the 6778, it seems like the only difference (besides finish color) is the rosewood fretboard and bridge, grade A top, and satin neck on the 6778, while the 1778 has an ebony fretboard and bridge, AA top and gloss neck. I know that i need to try to find one of each and play them both (good luck), but what difference technically and sound wise does the ebony vs. rosewood fretboard and bridge, A vs. AA top, and gloss vs satin neck make? Input please!

It is not likely that you will find the same models with the two grade of tops to compare. I guess that it does make a difference even if only because the factory says so.
I would say as long as you can afford the upgrade...take it.
(and a gloss neck is really nice)

You know, I was on the purchase list for 3 months and they kept moving the delivery date back......referring to the dealer. I got so tired of being strung along I decided to purchase the 6778LX...........as far as quality I think they are the same......finish is gloss to satin as stated. I can live without gloss. A Sitka rather than AA Sitka......no big deal to me. Rosewood to Ebony.......either is fine. I played the 1778.....it was very nice, I only assume the 6778 will be just as good. If not I have a 45 day guarantee if not happy.

I found a review of the lx 6778 and the legend LX in a magazine called guitar and Bass, or something like that. I was surprised to see that they seemed to prefer the 6778 to the legend lx. I own a 1778lx and I'm very happy with it (how can I argue with quality woods and quality construction?). I paid a little more to get the 1778 over the 6778 and I have no regrets because I'm so happy with this baby. There are many here who have reported that they have really liked the 6778. It's hard to imagine, with what I have seen, that you'd find very many dealers with both to run an A and B comparison. So, if you order on the net be sure the return policy will work for you if you go that route. I have never played the 6778 because I've never seen it in a store! You did say that the only difference is the satin versus gloss neck, the quality of the wood top and the use of ebony versus rosewood. Generally speaking, the differences in woods, and the difference in quality of the wood used can make a big difference in sound quality. I'm not sure if it does in this case. It would be good if people who have played both would check in with their opinions and experiences. Al, have you played both?

Supposedly an ebony fingerboard gives a bit more sustain (harder/denser wood). I've also heard a gloss neck actually increases friction against skin compared to a satin finish, although it probably provides more protection (and looks nicer).

Have played all at some time but, apart from the 1778LX, only for a store tryout. I feel that the difference between the standard/special models in sound or playing are minor if not just cosmetic.

The question is more over wether or not you choose vehicles with more or less options! My pick up truck is a "Plain Jane" fleet vehicle because I needed it and my funds were limited. My Wife's car is an LX with leather and power options because I should. ;)

If you can pay a few hundred more you may be thankful later. They are all excellant guitars and worthy instruments.

So many choices and so little funds! :(

I have played only the 1778 but have played and owned guitars of equal value that have the attributes you mention. I'll say this:

1. Gloss is easier by far to take care of.

2. Ebony is harder and can take more abuse.

3. Gloss necks are a little easier to grip and I find them easier to slide on.

If you can afford the better model, get it. We rarely regret not purchasing an inferior product.

There's no right or wrong answer to this. I prefer a gloss neck and ebony fingerboard. It's a personal preference. If you can play both, then make the decision on which guitar sounds and feels best to you, not on what people here tell you.

I would also suggest that you have both guitars played by somebody else while you sit across from them and listen. Ovations tend to sound better when you are across from them than when you are behind them playing.
