Location: NJ | Last summer, I bought an Applause soprano uke at a cool little surf shop on the Jersey Shore.
I'd been "plinka-plinking" around with it, but never really sat down and tried to LEARN it. The past couple weekends, whenever Jeanette and I would hang out at the pool, I'd bring it (and a recently-purchased MelBay Uke Chord book) along. I've at least gotten to the point where I can play a couple of songs (providing they're comprised of 3-4 major chords :-) I have a problem forming some of the more complex chord shapes with my fat fingers on the skinny little soprano neck. Perhaps down the road I should look into a tenor, but for now this'll have to do . .
Another problem I've been experiencing is intonation on the third string ("C"). When I get the uke tuned "open" the notes played on that string just don't sound right when playing chords. Anybody else out there that owns this model having this problem?
I'm thinking that perhaps it needs to be re-strung, since I've never changed the strings since I've owned it, and I don't really know how long it sat it the shop previous to that. Any recomendations on strings? Aren't all of the strings just monofilament of the same diameter??
Can't I just buy a spool of mono, cut it, knot it, and make my own??
Any insight???? |

Location: Scotland | Cliff, soprano ukes have mono-filament strings but they're different gauges. D'Adarrio Soprano strings are gauged .022, .034, .032 & .024. I guess you'd get away with 2 .023's & 2 .033's |

Location: Upper Left USA | Being one that doesn't "Know Ukes" I was relieved to hear the strings don't come in 20 lb. test, 30 lb. test, etc.
I have played a Baritone Uke prior to presenting it as a Retirement present for a friend that sold his home and got one on wheels. They chord just like the last four of a guitar.
Same "plink-plunk" but an easier cross over. |

Location: NJ | Just got an e-mail from one of our resident "Ukemaniacs" who lives with uke strings the way most of us live with house dust. Sending me couple sets in the mail.
It's nice to know nice people . . . . |
