Looking at the current high bid on this Elite LX NewEnglandBurst I'm starting to question my undying attachment to my 'vintage' 1868. Still, I think I like the old maple triangle fret markers on mine more than those perloid diamonds. And mine has the mahogany (or is it walnut?) overlay on the headstock; much nicer than black (although that gloss black don't look bad). And why is the neck so light on this LX? Mine is dark with two light stripes.

Still, that price ain't bad. Wonder if it'll stay there...

Cruster,
Looks like a great deal on the surface but
Note though that this ebayer says nothing about a case and does not even show a photo of an Ovation Case. Now Most dealers wouldn't dare ship it without a case,..but this ebayer may use it as an oportunity to make more cash. Before you bid and jump in the water on this one...ebay the seller with questions about the Ovation and about the Case.

Most LXs have a lighter color neck than the older ones from my observation. In fact, I think the color has tended to be lighter for several years, my 1777 has a neck not much darker than this.

IMHO, it will go around $550 to $575.

FRG, 5yr warranty, no case - doubt if this is like the 2003 Collector's where there was a rumor that the FRG was to dump an overstock. Wonder what is wrong with it that it would be an FRG?

Seeing a couple of eBay sellers mentioning FRG in small print.

For a ltd lifetime, no prior repair, and a case - would get a quote from Al.

No, no, no!! I'm not going to buy it. I was just surprised how low the price was, which tempted me{1} just enough to consider replacing mine (I really need a name for my 1868)...but, I think I like the old styling and details better than the new ones. I especially like the darker neck and the wood headstock overlay on mine, compared to the lighter neck and black headstock face. 'T would be nice to have an updated pre-amp, though. :)

FRG == Factory Reconditioned Goods? Guitar? Returned?

{1} Normally, I can resist anything but temptation.

(edit: I forgot to add my footnote...sorry!)

FRG - factory reconditioned guitar...means something was wrong, it was returned, and repaired.

However, a few rumors around about the 2003 Collector's - there seemed to be a lot of FRG's near the end of the year.

For the LX's, my understanding is that there is no excess inventory and that they are selling all they can produce.

Probably nothing wrong with an FRG but there is a shorter warranty and it should be disclosed if you ever sell or trade it. Heck, could be a pre-amp replaced with a good unit.

As to the case, my understanding is that it comes with a case from the factory...thus, seller is offering you the opportunity to buy "your" case.

Wonder how many bid on these not realizing it is an FRG.

FWIW, the seller is not including the original, factory hard shell case with this auction. I just sent him another email asking if one is available at extra cost. We'll see...

Oh, and his name is....ready for this?....Jim Taylor. I find that ironic. A Taylor selling Ovations...

:)

EDIT: This just in on the case situation:

Sure---you can bid on a 8158 Ovation case in our ebay store---which will fit it. $89
Will waive the S&H if it goes with the guitar

Thank You
Jim Taylor

This is no deal.....$459(at the moment), plus $89, plus $59 shipping.....getting awfully close to not worth it. A new non-FRG with case was $930 at Elderly earlier this year, and I beleive it could be had more cheaply than that.

They've got way too many 'terms' that you have to accept to buy from them; they're not interested in you as a customer; they're interested in your payment - and then you'll see your guitar in TWO WEEKS?!?! That's crappy service, ESPECIALLY FOR $59 shipping/handling!!

I wouldn't do business with them unless it was a very rare and desirable item at a good price...

FRG implies that it left the factory but in most cases it never did. It's just a different way of saying second. What will those marketing types think of next???

So, if one of my kids won't leave home until their "into" their twenties - should I stamp FRG on their forehead or their backside?

Marketing is like a lumpy pillow; the more you have the fluff it, the bigger the pain in the neck later.

Based on the most recent ad I saw in Guitar (or was it Acoustic Guitar? Fingerstyle? Fine Linen? OK, whatever rag it was...) for Ovation, they don't think much at all. I was bummed because it was so bland. And not in a vanilla ice cream way...at least that's good bland.

No offense to anyone here who might have been involved in that ad. It just wouldn't have compelled me to find out more about Os, let alone work up some GAS.

Crusty, were you getting your oil changed or your nails done - that should tell you which rag it was!

I agree that advertising should challenge your mind and not insult it.

I was getting my wallet emptied at the local Barnes and Noble, actually. :)
