Location: NJ | The previous Fogelberg/Yes/PBS discussion reminded me of a PBS program I just watched the other night . . . .
Evidently, some guy bought (at an auction) a portable jukebox (a suitcase-sized "Victrola" that holds/plays forty 45rpm records) that John Lennon owned in the 60's. It was loaded with records that Lennon enjoyed and found "influential" in his musical development, and the artists/titles on the "index label" were written in Lennon's hand.
The program was comprised of taking this jukebox to various worldwide locales (ala "the Traveling Gnome"), and interviewing the people that were directly (and/or indirectly) responsible for the records that Lennon kept and were inspired by (Leiber & Stoller, Steve Cropper, Delbert McClinton, Donovan, The Isley Brothers, and others).
What was interesting was how certain little aspects of each song later became the seminal influence to a lot of Lennon/Beatle songs. There was this one VERY obscure American R&B tune done by a Bobby SomethingOrOther (sorry, I can't recall his name) that Lennon liked (and later covered at the Cavern). They interviewed this guy (who was playing an OLD Strat) and the whole song was based on a guitar riff that he admitted was a take on an old Ray Charles piano riff. Lennon's interpretation of that guitar riff later went on to become the guitar intro to "I Feel Fine". Lennon evidently met Delbert VERY early on in England, and Delbert's harmonica playing had a bit to do with the inspiration with "Love Me Do".
Pretty interesting stuff.

Saw the ads for the program, but of course I missed it :confused: Looked like an interesting program. I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but shure ended up playing alot of their material over the years :cool: |

Funny you mentioned this, because last night I watched the Lennon Legend DVD and was thinking about him.
And there is a section of a video with John in the studio playing an Ovation Legend Ltd.
It's really incredible that it has been 24 years since he left this world, and George is gone too.
But their music will live forever.
I love John and George.

Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma | reading thru the song list I was struck by not only the covers of those songs that the beatles did but also by the same style of songs lennon wrote... It would be interesting to see the same type of list for McCartney... Big Beatles fan here and now I know something new...Too Kewl.. |

Location: Fayetteville, NC | John Released an album called Rock-N-Roll that had alot of great covers. his version of
"Stand By Me" was on it along with some other greats. While he Didn't write the songs, He sure did great versions of them and made them his own. |
