I'm having bad luck upgrading to a better electric, but I can afford a new stomp box! This looked interesting. Any opinions welcome.

Saw that advertised in my new "Guitar Player" mag and it caught my eye, I also would like to hear from anybody who tries one. Made me think about trying my Martin acoustic preamp with my Viper, haven't got the nerve to do that yet but I'm thinking about it.

I think the name is a little misleading, it's basically just a gain boost and as such it's pretty similar to the MXR micro-amp. It can be used as a level boost for solos or to get a non-master-volume amp to break-up earlier.

So it won't make my tangy tele sound like a humbucker?!! Dang. Good ad though.

I have a Martin acoustic preamp with a tone and volume control, can I use it to overdrive an amp without doing any damage? I have a Carvin 60 watt amp with 12AX7's and 6L6's with a Celestion speaker that belongs to my daughter so I don't want to do any damage. It is hard to get it to distort under normal conditions until it is maxed on volume. (makes it hard to play late at night as I wake up the neighborhood before it goes into distortion)

Check out the Seymour Duncan pickup site on converting to series on your Tele. It gives a fat sound by putting your single poles in series by adding a DPDT switch like on the new American Teles that Fender is selling for a grand. A DPDT switch costs 2 or 3 bucks installing it is another matter.

Bailey, the Martin Acoustic pre-amp is a buffer-pre-amp/matching transformer rather than a gain boost, so it's not intended for that purpose.

Bailey,
I just went to the website, my eyes kinda glazed a little bit, but I'm going to explore it. I love my tele because it's so simple, whenever there's a problem I can fix it myself, just take out my handy dandy soldering iron and solder away ...

CharlieB,
How does it change the sound? I understand the clean boost for the lead work, but does it just boost the gain to get more mud, or does it go for a warm distortion?

This is all about defering GAS.
Thanks

I mentioned the Duncan site because my '66 Mustang has Seymour Duncans and I downloaded a circuit diagram because I'm thinking of installing a switch for series since I read that the new American series Fender teles have it built in on the tone switch, a push button.

Thanks Paul T

I guess I won't try anything with that pre amp with my electrics.

Bailey,
Do you think this would thicken up the tone. I think it might be easier to put in new guts, then to try putting in a switch.

The S Duncan web site had a setup for a Tele very similar to that with a 5 way switch, that should work very well to add a great deal of variety to your tele's sound. Every review I've read of single coils in series says it fattens the sound.
