The Last Ovation I owened had Gold Tuning Keys? I think Ovation uses Schaller Keys don't they? I was told yesterday that the guitar that I have on order comes stock with the Pearl type keys. I like the look of the pearl type set against the walnut head, but they look brittle to me. Has anyone out there had problems with this type of Tuning Key breaking? Or is it as strong as the gold metal type? I would like to hear from you Ovation lovers which Tuning Keys would you go with and why.

The schallers with the pearloid buttons and not brittle at all. But if you ever do break a button it's easy to replace. I suspect that when you see how beautiful they look, you will be retrofitting pearloid buttons onto your other guitars as well.

Hey Randy!

Breakage should not be a problem. If it is then there are other thing wrong! I like the gold hardware with the Pearloid tuners. The metal knobs are just too hard to keep clean - especially the gold ones. My Elite's gold knobs are in a bag now.

You can pick these up from StewMac.com

Many models also use Ping keys which look like Schallers but allow the guitar to reside at a more affordable transaction price. (how's that for marketing rhetoric?) Parts between ping and schaller I don't think are interchangable.
The pearloid buttons are not brittle.

I bought some pearloid buttons from StewMac and put them on my 2000 Collectors. They work and look great. Except I found out later the tuners were Pings. They still work and look great. Ignorance is bliss.

So the parts are interchangable? That's good to know.

My 1124-4 Country Artist, built in 1975, still has the original tuners with pearl buttons on them; they appear to be in perfect condition. They have the screws on the bottom, so they are replaceable, but they look old and original.

I used the original screws (philips style) and not the ones that came with the pearloids from StewMac. Maybe that makes a difference ... I dunno and frankly, it works, so I really don't care. Hizzoner did the same thing and it worked for him, too.

That's right! Use the old screws.

When you modify an older O to Straplocks you need to use the original screws as well. I had to put them in a hand drill and take down the OD though.

I think the ebony look classy and I like the wood look and feel.

When I was on the PFC Tour -- which was excellent, BTW -- John Budny gave me some Ping Pearloids for my Collector's 2000. They didn't fit as well as the Schallers, for some reason. So, I have the Schallers back on my Ping tuners.
