Why are some saddles at an angle, some at 90 degrees to the strings, and some staggered for each string? I guess that it has something to do with harmonics at the 12th fret, but what factors decide which saddle style to choose?

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Brad, the saddle configuration is likely chosen for its ability to set the intonation. On electrics, it's usually easier, with the fine adjustment. On acoustics, without that, it is a little tougher, and that is why you see all the variations.
