Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | Has anyone seen the Martin summer catalogue featuring the D-100 Deluxe on the cover? Am I out of touch, or is the decoration on this way over the top? They must have used half the world's supply of abalone and mother of pearl making those 50 D-100's. The inlay on the back features a representation of a guitar at the top, but what's with the headstock, which looks like an unfortunate genetic mishap version of a Stratocaster headstock? Why not represent a Martin-style headstock?
And at $100,000 each, who's going to buy these guitars? My guess is: wealthy Japanese industrialists and U.S. dot.com millionaires, none of whom can actually play guitar. They'll buy them as ego trophies and/or investments. That being the case, what a waste of Adirondack spruce and Brazilian rosewood. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | You're probably right about the dot commers but there are lots of other guys who are customers. Lawyers, doctors, wall street guys, heavy collectors. A Les Paul burst is in the 150-200 range now. Most people tend to think that this ultra high end of the market is small. If you have the right product it's not that small! Martin is probably laughing all the way to the bank.
The question is will these be able to be sold for double or more in the years (10-20-30+) to come. My guess is yes. |
