Location: New Hampsha | I've seen a few Hurricanes/Thunderheads/Typhoons advertised on ebay where the seller claims that finish "checks" are quite normal. Some of the closeups look pretty ragged. My Hurricane has no such splits/checks/etc. Either I have an exception or these guys aren't telling the truth. What's up? |

I have several Storm series guitars and although I have a couple of mint ones, more often than not, especially if they were played, they tended to get those finish checking lines in them. Maybe a combination of the finish, or just that they are very light-weight and over years of playing... the wood moving, the finish not... etc etc... Don't really know the reason. But I have seen it a lot on those guitars. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Many of the old Storm models do frequently have thin cracks and sometimes even peeling of the clearcoat lacquer. This is often referred to as "checking". But just like you, I have also seen many that are pristine with no such effects. It always seems to be the spruce top that checks much worse than the non-spruce back and sides. I can't explain this. From what I understand some Storm bodies were finished by Ovation and others were finished by Framus. Not sure of there is a relation here between which ones check and which don't. People making claims on ebay that finish checking is "common" are not misleading people, but one should not assume that this happens to all Storms. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Only the real early ones were brought in finished. All the rest were done in NH and it was straight polyester finish which is very brittle and prone to cracking. Later the acoustic finish went to 70% poly/30% urethane so it would be more "stretchable". Most of the cracks came from the cold and shipping them in it.
They use a different finish now. |

Location: Fayetteville, NC | I've noticed alot of ebay descriptions mention the finish checking...and a close friend that owns one has some on his. I've come to believe it's just a common thing to see on some of the models. |

Location: New Hampsha | I already know I have an exceptional guitar; just one more reason to hug it! Mine looks like it was played once and stored for 35 years. When I see it on the stand I smile, when I play it I'm enthralled. (now if my fingers would just shrink just a tad for that narrow neck.) I get goose bumps just thinking of it... |
