Location: hatzic lake, bc, canada. | in preparation for a new set of strings i decided to remove the old set and give my 1537 a good clean and polish.seems the nut is no longer firmly attached to the neck,in fact it's not attached in any way at all.what should i use to re-attach? how firmly should it be fixed? would this have had a significant effect on the sound? |

Location: Upper Left USA | When the strings are installed they will hold it in place. The only risk is side-to-side shift. I would think that a little Titebond or hide glue would be sufficient and removable if needed. Just a little placed underneath (not visible). The square seating of the nut is the more critical aspect.
Most nuts I thought were held in place by the gunk deposits over the years!

Maybe Paul T can tell us about the cohesive bonding characteristics of similar and disimilar materials in an acoustically stressed environment using homogeneous gels and sols as a binding agent.
And who was that guy that Hot Glued his braces some time back?

If you dont have Titebond plain old Elmers Carpenters Wood Glue is quite nearly the same thing (or maybe its the exact same thing). Do not confuse this with white Elmers, which is different. We're talking the creamy yellow stuff.
You only need like two drops... just enough to tack it down and keep it there in case you take all the strings off. As a wear item, its supposed to come off pretty easy, so a new one can be fitted. |

Location: hatzic lake, bc, canada. | thanx charlie,but thinkin' woody was feedin' me a line i went for the two part epoxy and two wood screws thru the back of the neck, is that maybe overkill? or is there more i could do to be sure this dosnt re-occur? |

Well unless some truck runs over it, or it falls off a spaceship, or I sit on it, somebody somewhere, someday is gonna want to take it off. Why not make it easy on 'em?
Super glue, epoxy and the like will take a little wood from under the nut when you tap 'em off. |
