Location: south east Michigan | Happy Fathers Day to where it applies.
Just for fun, has anyone taken up listening to music that is supposed to be for your kids?
Sometimes I will give full endorsement to some of "their" music. Drives them nuts.
The "Presidents of the Unites States" first CD is still one of my favorites. Lump, Peaches, Dune Buggy, even "Kick Out The Jams!"
"Middle" by Jimmy Eat World is also good.

Location: 6 String Ranch | That is one way to go but I find I'm more likely to listen to music of MY father's time, Robert Johnson, T-Bone and all those boys. Of course, I don't think he listened to much of that, he was much more main stream. |

Location: NJ | I'm still a mental kid so I listen to all the new stuff. Funny is I find myself slipping back into jazz more and more. The golden age of the 50's and early sixties being my favorite.
My dad? well he listened to polkas. |

My grandfather used to constantly listen to polka. I still remember being really little at his house early on the weekends and him playing his favorite polka 8tracks again and again.
If I find myself listening to local am radio and there is a polka station, I'll almost always leave it on |

Location: nyc area | back in the 20's-30's, the oahu music publishing company sold lessons along with sheet music door to door... my father said they would go to the music store where there would be piles of cheap acoustic lap steel guitars available for students..I use to have one of those... a mahogony mastertont... it imploded one winter in my apt in nyc... the string tension pulled the neck right into the body..guess in was that high G tuning.. GBDGBD...sounded great while it lasted.. |

Location: Tennessee | My dad played sax, piano and rhythm guitar in a band while in grad school ... I remember him packing up to go to his gigs when I was 2-3 years old. Mostly bossa nova type stuff, along with standards. They played a lot of the ballroom type cocktail dances in LA in the late 50's/early 60's. Made a couple of records.
He bought this outrageously loud Curtis Mathis stereo system and played a lot of stuff, from Russian military marches to Herb Albert. I remember him coming home with the Meet the Beatles album. He also played polkas, and yes, he played accordian too. Still has it. Along with the banjo. :)
Later on, he started playing a lot of Marvin Hamlisch and other ragtime stuff. As he has gotten on a bit, he gravitates back to playing bossa nova and other latin bits on his piano.
The last few years he has been playing sax in an Orchestra in Holland, where he has a house now. Although he has been quite ill lately, I was treated last month to a stirring rendition of Girl From Ipanema on our old baby grand he had shipped to his house in France.

Location: Converse, Texas | My dad didn't play any musical instrument, but he saw the potential in me. He bought me a clarinet, trombone and two guitars. He quickly noticed that I took to the guitar the best. He really didn't approve of the music I listened to. He preferred listening to the crooners, he let my band practice in the attic. Well... MANY years have gone by, and my dad is no longer with me. But I have find memories. |
