Does anybody know if scratches in the finish (not into the wood) can be removed? This is not a finish crack or checking - it is a pretty large scratch near the bottom of my 1981 Legend. Any ideas? Can it be buffed out?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Woody,

The best products for scratch removal are available from Stewart McDonald. (Their on-line catalog is available at www.stewmac.com.) There are various grades of polishing compounds, ranging from Swirl Remover to Coarse.

The Swirl Remover is great for fine scratches such as pick marks, etc., and the others (Fine, Medium, Coarse) will work for deeper scratches; however, you must use great caution when using anything other than Swirl Remover. Fortunately, Ovations have a very thick finish, and thus, can tolerate more scratch removal than other brands of guitars with other finishes.

There are, of course, scratches that are too deep for polishing compound, and the only solution is a professional repair. I recommend trying the Swirl Remover and going from there.

This is for deep scratches ..It would be good to sand the scratch out first. 320 ,then 400 then 1200, etc. Go as fine as you can. Make sure you use a flat block so you dont create a funny dip in the finish. Polyester is tuff stuff to buff out without a buffing wheel. Like the previous post states , the finish is pretty thick. To check the finish thickness, take a marker pen and draw a little line on a shiney part of the top. You can kind of see the thickness that way. If it looks close it may be thin. Some year Ovations are thicker than others. Ovations made in Moosup Ct. have notorious thin finish. Coincidently around the same year as yours. ??? Rubbing alcohol will clean the marker pen off.

I would suggest that you quit playing that sucker and just hang it on the wall, maybe encased in a display box. A guitar with a scratch should never be seen in public, and I would suggest you lynch Willie Nelson if he ever comes to your town, for cruelty to stringed instruments. But what do I know, I only listen to guitars rather than staring at them looking for the slightest scratch or defect. I probably ought to pitch my old guitar into the dustbin as it shows signs of being played. I also just noticed that some of my furniture is less than pristine after some years and 4 children, off to the dustbin. Shit, I just looked in a mirror, Does any of that stuff work on the human face?
