It seems there is a comprtition amongst hackers to destroy as many boards as possible over the 4th weekend. It might be wise to shut down for a day or two and, hopefully come back up unscathed. Any Ideas?

I heard that too Bailey. I don’t mean to strike the wrong chord, but personally I think half of every thing in the news is hype, propaganda and some times just down right scare tactics. My guess is these hackers are always out there, doing their rotten thing and the chances of this board getting hit is very slim.
However, if the powers that be, decide to shut us down over the fourth, I would not blame them in the least or be upset from a little bit of precaution.
Seems as though there is always some out there that loves destruction.
On a better "note", I wish every one a great Independence Day! May it be free from harm and tom foolery. :D

I have a backup as of today. I usually do one a week, but especially if it's a long weekend when I won't be around. The hosting company also backs up every day and they are the ones who would detect hackers and such. Frankly the "announcement" of an attack like mentioned above is a form of virus also if you think about it. Somone leaks to the press about a possible attempt and everyone reports on it while the guy who did the leak sits back going "made'ya look !!" :) However, it's always a good a idea to be cautious.

Unfortunately, there IS some functionality to paranoic ideation. "To be forewarned is to be forearmed", or some other, equally, inane, platitude.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean that somebody isn't actually following you.

I get variations of this one regularly (I got this yesterday from someone in my address book) -

"Unfortunately, a virus has been passed on to me by a contact. My address book WAS infected. Since you are in my address book, there is a good chance you will find it in your computer too. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) cannot be detected by Norton or McAfee antivirus systems."

Same deal, different approach. They try to get you to delete a perfectly harmless normal Windows file.
