There are two Collector's series models of interest to me on Ebay. One is a 2001 which is listed as having a rosewood top (I thought I read that the 2001 was actually redwood and is supposed to have great acoustic sound). The other is a 1999. Does anyone know the details (tonewood, sound, etc.) of the 1999? I don't recall reading anything on it.

2001 = Redwood and one of the best sounding Ovations made.

If all is equal... The 2001 IMHO is a much better sounding guitar.

The '99 was laminated Bubinga, the 2001 was solid Redwood. I know where my money would go.

The 1999 collectors had a laminated top? That seems strange. I don't think I remember seeing an American made Ovation with an laminated top. And for it to be on a collectors model kinda seems weird. Why was this top laminated? Thanks....Paul Hebert

As quality tonewoods become more and more scarce, you'll probably start seeing more of it. And . . . not all woods that are pretty to look at necessarily sound good, ergo: "lamination" - put a real thin slice of the "eye candy" on the face and put the "workin' wood" underneath.

Besides, all Adamases have laminated tops.

Neil, a lot of the fancy, pretty wood top used on collector series are lamintated, e.g. 2002, 2000, 1999. These laminated wood tops are not typical laminated one and sound pretty good. 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998 sound pretty much the same, though 2001 has solid wood top.

Mind you, collector series is not top of the line Ovation. It sits between Custom Elite/Custom Legend and Elite/Legend - Adamas is at the top, of course.

Then, for the best acoustic "sounding" wood-top models, should I be looking at the redwood collector's edition or a custom elite or custom legend (mid-depth bowl)? I guess I have to audition an Adamas this weekend at GC. Ugghh, I really hate that place . . .

Al, wake up, wrong Paul. I have no problem with Laminated tops, the Adamas is laminated, but comparing a carbon fibre laminate to a wood laminate is a little unfair. Plywood tops can be made to sound OK. Despite Rick's justifications I think a ply top on a guitar approaching $2K is letting the side down. The Bubinga guitars were laminated because bubinga looks pretty but doesn't make a stable top wood.

Neil, try CE778 Custom Elite w/ mid-bowl or 1769-AD5 Al Di Meola (deep bowl) or 1779 Custom Legend w/ mid-bowl. Adamas sounds a bit cold but has really good tonal balance with good bass.

Pay attention to guitar strings when you are comparing guitars at GC. CE778 with dead strings won't sound good.
