I have to decide which guitar to keep, my newly bought 1613 Ovation or my Guild Mark IV.

Right now I feel my Guild sounds better, but I've only had my Ovation for 1 month.

I know that my Elite 1537 is starting to open up a bit after playing it every day. I would hope my Ovation classical 1613 would do the same.

So, I'm asking for end results. Who out there plays an Ovation classical and if you do, what is your opinion???

The real problem with classical guitars is having to play them on your other knee. Miles can do this with ease, as I'm sure some others can as well but for most people this requires great effort and training.

I don't think any Ovation nylon strings are good as classical guitars. That's not to say they aren't very useful instruments, just that they don't cut it as a true classical guitar, which are designed & built with very specific goals. If you need a guitar for a classical reportoire the Guild will arguably do a better job. If you need an electro nylon-string for jazz or country there's little better than an O.

Paul T's post hits the questions that needs to be asked. What kind of music are you playing with your nylon string? Is the Guild an acoustic electirc? Which will meet your needs?

I have an acquaintance in town who plays an Ovation nylon string classical (I'm not sure what model) as a strolling Mariachi performer at a local Mexican food place - he's a music teacher with a PHD in music and sociology. I've seen him play and he evokes some fantastic sound from the Ovation. He told me he gets the best projection out of all the classical guitars he owns...

Bradley,

One thing I've tried is to use a capo. At the 1st or 2nd fret, the capo brings the scale length close to that of a 12-fret classical and makes fingering easier on some chords. It mostly depends on how much of a purist you are.

Bradley,
I have a 1663 Legend Classic that I love to play! I think the 1663 is just the later incarnation of yours, except that mine has a cutaway and the stacked volume/tone knob is on the side (as opposed to being up near the neck). There may be other differences too that I'm not aware of...
I don't know anything about Guilds so I can't help you decide which one to keep... but then again, this is the Ovation Fan Club website ;)
So I'm leaning toward keeping the....

I had a 1763 Classical (cutaway, OP 24 electronics) that was a great guitar. But I was looking for a Country Artist cutaway model 1674 but couldn't find one. Eventually, I did find the C.A. and kept both for a couple of years. I enjoyed the classical, but when it came time to sell it to afford a Thunderhead, I let it go. I miss it and the C.A. doesn't quite have the acoustic sound, but it gives me two more frets to the body, access to more above the body (if I could only learn to go above the third fret I think I'd be on to something) and it's a slightly narrower neck. My goal was to learn a few Jerry Reed tunes (a very few) and I'm satisfied with my choice.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'm a folk guitarist / finger picker, not a classical guitarist. I like the way the Ovation plays/feels over the Guild. I like the deepness and mellowness of the Guild over the Ovation.

The other thing I do from time to time is record. I'm going to try to do some recording with both guitars and compare the results.

Again thanks,

Bradley

Finally had time to do some recording to compare the two guitars.

The Guild sounded a little "muddy" in the recording. I played the same part with my Ovation and it really came through in the mix, very clear and distinct.

Guess the Guild goes on Ebay. Thanks for the advise.
