GAS strikes again. Well, not really.

I wanted to pick up a guitar to take to the park, beach, picnics, etc. I got an Aniversary Ovation, model 1157-7 off of EBay (of course) last week for $180.

The top if VERY warped. However someone replaced the normal saddle with a higher saddle and it seems to work. The guitar is playable (still needs some tweeking) and, dispite the warping, sounds very good.

I asked the previous owner how it go so warped, but she didn't know. She bought it from a friend 7 years earlier and it was already warped.

The warp is downwards. The area of the bridge has sunken quite a bit. What I was curious about is, how can this happen? My J-200 is slightly warped behind the bridge due to the tension of the strings. It is warped upwards. That to me makes sence.

But how does a bridge sink???

Just wondering.

There is downward pressure on the bridge and my guess is the bracing below the bridge (by that I mean below the bridge toward the end of the guitar) is OK and the bridge is rotating around the bracing and sinking into the thin top material from the pressure on the bridge saddle. The same rotation that a bridge does when it pulls up only around a different fulcrum, the fulcrum being towards the end instead of towards the neck. I saw this same problem on a Mexican made flat top mandolin that a friend of mine bought in Tiajuana, and, as you have said, the mandolin looked strange but it sounded OK. For all I know, he may still be playing that mandolin.

Bradley, If you look in front of the bridge about 3" there's a hole. That's where the water is getting in causing the bridge to sink. This is probably one of the early A braced gitters which had this happen sometimes. It probably won't get worse than what you see now.

What I find amazing is the fact that dispite the wavy top, it still sounds great.

Looks great tool

My 1537? No warp behind the bridge, but if you hold it to the light you can see ripples where the bracing is. This has been discussed here on the board; it doesn't cause any problems.

My aniversary guitar is warped on both sides of the soundhole. The previous owner installed a higher saddle to make up for the warp. The guitar really sounds good. The seller on E-bay knocked of $50 after I bought it because of a small crack next to the fretboard that she had failed to mention in the ad. I taped it off and superglued it so that it wouldn't get any worse. See, I learned from Norseman1's mistakes. All and all a great buy for what I paid for it.

You got a lot of good steal from ebay! $180 for Anniversary model is unheard of.

On the 1537, do you feel the area behind the bridge bulge or warp with your hand?

If you saw the warp, you might not think so. Once you heard it, you'ld know I did.

I felt the area behind the bridge on my 1537. I didn't feel any bulges or warps. My Custom Legend, that's a different story. It has a warp. Even my Gibson has a very slight warp behind the bridge. I took it to an authorized Gibson shop. He checked it out and said it was nothing to be worried about.

Does you 1537 have a warp?
