Location: South Africa | This is a great site! I posted a question about my Korean made Celebrity CC024 yesterday, and got the ifo I needed within hours. Thanks to Rick, Moody p.i. & ahorsewithnoname.
I am new to Ovation, so x'cuse me if this is a stupid question. Are Korean made Ovations a cheaper version of some of the USA models, similar to what Fender does with their Mexican Strat, or are they just different models which are made in another factory? Is there a noticeable quality difference?
I have always liked the look of these roundbacks, but have never bought one because they carry a certain amount of controversy. I am now converted!
My Celebrity is not even a very expensive guitar, but feels, looks and sounds better than many of the more expensive guitars which I have played. I really enjoy this thing, and my other accoustics have now been banished to their cases. Long live Ovation!! |

Welcome to the board, you are one of a growing number of board members who are happy with their Korean made instruments. I have looked at the mandolins which I play and my nephew had a Celebrity, and I was impressed with the quality. Affordability is an important thing for many musicians, especially when they are starting out. The Korean Ovations are a quality instrument at a good price and a good introduction to the roundback world. If you like it and you advance, you can pick up vintage American instruments at good prices, but that is a risky business until you have a lot of experience. The Korean made instruments are quality and are worth having.

My first O was the Chinese made Applause AE68. I think they call it an AE28 now. It was OK, but I had a GAS attack and wanted a "real" Ovation. :D
I'm a part-time minister of music and I don't feel I need a flashy guitar for church. I didn't really consider USA v. "Pacific-based subsidiary".
I chose the Celebrity CC059 for a variety of reasons and when it finally arrived (special order)I instantly saw the difference in quality between Chinese- and Korean-made. With one exception,my previous guitars were Korean made Yamahas--both of which were quality instruments for the $$$ invested. I just figured if it said Ovation on the headstock it had to be quality.

I agree. The Korean O's are very good value for the $$$ spent. I also own a Fender Strat (Mexican), and although this guitar says "Fender", there is a noticeable difference in quality and sound, when compared to the real thing. I suppose you get what you pay for, but I ended up changing the pickups to Seymour Duncans and almost spending as much as I would have for a USA strat. |

One thing I can say for the Applause, it was one tough cookie. I was playing it in Sunday School once when the very well-used strap came off! To my horror :eek: , the A crashed to the concrete floor. To my surprise :D there was not a scratch on it. And it still played too!
PS Mike--didn't we Yanks steal rugby and turn it into the NFL? |
