Location: Virginia Beach | I have a Balladeer model 1861 from around 1986. I can't figure out how to change the battery! The electronics are different from the new ones, the knob has FET 3 on it. There is no battery compartment on the side and the preamp doesn't "pop out". I cant find a battery inside but it's obviously one in there that's getting kind of weak. Does anyone else have this model guitar and know what to do?

Location: NJ | There should be a screw on the outside of the bowl
(look straight down in your playing position).
Give that screw a quarter turn.
Reach in through the soundhole (remove or seriously loosen strings first) towards where that screw is. You should feel the battery (and it's holder).
Pull it out (slowly).
Replace battery and reverse the procedure. |

Location: St. Petersburg, FL USA | If the attachment is anything like mine ('83 Balladeer), probably identical, be CAREFUL when you loosen the screw. I have found the "slot" that the screw fits into is made of very soft metal that won't stand up to a lot of fidgeting. You can actually apply some upward pressure on the battery casing while you turn the screw, this will help. The metal sleeve will slide off after you have done this. You'll want to take a good look at the screw (on the inside) and the slot on the battery case before you reassemble. It's not the easiest thing to get it back in place. |

Location: ma. | or use a piece of metal or hard plastic or wood or even a piece of ledge stone if you can find some in your backyard. just make sure it has a good straight edge on it (approximately 1/2"). you can also use a screwdriver if you have one available. place it directly in the slot located in the middle of the screw head, and just give it a turn. sounds hard but it's really easy. |
