Back in the 60's some of the Beatles biggest competition were The Monkeys.I remember watching their TV shows, but the rumor came out that none of them played their own instruments when they showed them playing. We know for a fact that Mickey really did play drums and Peter did play a bass and Mike really did play guitar and Davey sang but did they ever do anything together live or recorded that was really JUST THEM or were they another Milly Vanilly who just faked their way through it?
Did they write their own music?
Does anyone know the facts of The Monkey Band or just their hairdressers.
I kind of liked them back then , more for their humor( or lack of it ) than their music. GWB

I have always been a big Michael Nesmith fan. I really liked his music (First National Band) and other projects. While no virtuoso, he did play his instrument, write his own songs (and Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt) and made his own records. Besides music, he has done a lot of very cool things and impacted modern culture in a lot of ways. Music Videos. Home Videos. Not to mention Repo Man.

Interesting point.

His Mother invented the liquid paper correction fluid.

Another bit of trivia

Huey Lewis' grandfather invented the red wax used to seal cheese.

I too liked Mike Nesmith.

Deb was apparently in love with Davey Jones

All the women were in love with Davey Jones. I guess he was just too cute.

Huey Lewis
Was in a band called Clover, which backed Elvis Costello on "My Aim Is True", though Lewis had moved on at the time it was recorded, other Clover members along with Huey became Huey Lewis&The News.

The guitarist of Clover was John McFee who later wound up with the Doobies

I saw the Monkees live in their heyday. They could perform.

I heard rumor back in the Eighties Peter was panhandling and playing guitar on street corners for his dough. Probably B.S. GWB

Reference the John McFee comment. Not only was he with the Doobies, but he co-founded the country group Southern Pacific (which had several hits). He was in that group with former members of CCR and Pablo Cruise. I think John is back with the Doobies now - not sure though. Only interesting Monkees fact is that Stephen Stills auditioned, but did not make the cut.
