Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | A new member of the Professor’s office family, a 1996 EA68. This one has a beautiful maple top that appears to be a 3D cross between tiger flame and quilt. When viewed straight on, the finish looks like a piece of silk or velvet bunched up into neat ridges or rows. I’m not sure of the color. The closest current color is New England Burst, but this one has less color variation than what appears in Ovation’s current color chart. It changes from medium orange to a slightly darker orange toward the edges, with no red at all. Is there too much orange to be Amber Burst? I’m not sure if the wood grain is properly referred to as tiger flame or quilt. Does anybody have a formal name for this finish? Whatever it is, it sure draws attention.

This is a nylon string guitar? With that bridge it suggests steel strings to me. But what do i know?

That is indeed a steel-string guitar.
What I MEANT was that I'd love to have one just like it, . . but in nylon.

But you have confirmed i'm not completely nuts. Here i was, envisioning the Professor having to tie knots onto the end of his nylon strings.

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Piers, you asked about playability. I can't comment very much just yet as I've put 'only about two hours on it so far and my observations to date are limited. First off, playing it from a seated position feels very awkward, much like a solid bodied electric. Standing, it feels much more natural, lighter than a solid, but also more neck heavy than, say, a strat, and as the advertisements suggest, sounds like an acoustic when plugged it. This is the first guitar I've owned without clearly visible fret markers and I thought that might be uncomfortable for me, but it hasn't been so far. I also spend a lot of time in the upper frets and this guitar is sweet up there, very similar to the long necks of the original Ovation solid bodies. I removed all but one shim under the bridge and so far, so good. To date (it arrived only two days ago), I haven't gotten over just looking at it! |

Location: UK - Canterbury Kent | Professor - I am truly taken with the colour and burst. It is a beautiful guitar and I am thinking how on earth I will find one identical here in UK. I expect non exist this side of the pond.
When you have had more time playing with it, please update us with your impressions.
