I heard of a fairly new brand of coated string on the market where even the UNWOUND strings are coated. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I can't remember the brand name.
Thanks, John <>{

John,
probably not what you are looking for, but Black Diamond makes a set of strings that are coated with black. when I got my elite T it had a set on it, they were ok. however when I went to Fort Worth to Paul Wag's house and we played on the front porch, I couldn't see the strings in low light, unfamiliar chords were more difficult.

the early EXP's had coated trebles, but it wore off rather quickly.

Cleartone! That's it!
I don't know why I get excited by that answer. I've used Elixers for as long as they've been out. I always like them, and I always feel ripped off by the price (especially for a 12 string set with all those uncoated plain strings).
This is for the Pacemaker, on which string changes are enough of a project that I want strings with a longer life.

I can't remember the last time I spent $15 for a set of strings. I just buy guitars, they usually come with strings on 'em.

I'm still using the last of the 10 sets of 1818s I bought for $10. Restrung the UltraGS and Country Artist recently and still have to retune them every time I play.

There was a discussion on these strings just a little while ago.

Yeah, if you buy guitars often enough, as I have lately, you don't have to worry about strings. (kind of like the ash tray being full and trading the car)

Arthur, EXP's are usually around $10 at GC.
Jason, no, but I prefer the sound.

Sorry, Arthur, I forgot you were a downtowner.
You have to get by with, what, 3 or 4 good old fashioned world class music stores within walking distance? (Apple, Guitar Crazy, Portland Music, Pioneer, Artichoke, 12th Fret...)

OMA: i think you can get the EMJ's a bit cheaper at Portland Music, around $6. A while back Musicians Friend had a promo on EJ16's -- $2.95 + shipping. I picked up 20 packs, so i'm set for a while.

Oregonians: Living "Downtown", the folks at Apple and Portland Music Co actually act like they enjoy giving advice to me. When I went to buy strings and a strap while waiting for my Balladeer, the guy behind the desk had me pull down a Celebrity and mess-around with it... Until he really had to go back to work. I doubt that happens at a big-box store. But I heard radio ads for GC. I just couldn't find it. I got the EJ16's cuz someone on OFC said that EXP's squeaked too much. I will try others.
I still no nothing about coated treble strings.

Arthur, I agree about Portland Music and Apple (bought my first O at Apple). I've had pretty good treatment there as well, but I have run into some outstanding people at GC, usually in the acoustic room.
There's a Guitar Center in Clackamas, right by the Cosco on 82nd, and in Tigard on Cascade Ave (just off Scholls Ferry Rd, across 217 from Washington Square.
Be prepared for loudness.

Now that I play more. The whole "strang thang" is more important to me. I have found, from experience, that it gets expensive if you want to sound your best and replace standard strings as they should be replaced.
The Elixer Nanowebs are not to thick on the coating. The Polywebs are great but a little odd sounding I think... Also I find if you buy the Nanowebs they feel stiff to me.. I buy them 1 number lighter than I am used to. I have gone back down to 12's so I buy 11's in a nonoweb. They sound great for three or four gig's and I pay $10 a set right off ebay when you buy 5 packs at a time. pretty cheap considering it would take me four sets of regular strings to get through 4 gig's. Not sure who makes the coated strings on all 6?????? But these Nono's are good strings for the money.
Randy
