Looks like the kids are interested enough in recording that it would be worth getting the hardware and software to do some basic home recording. We would be recording guitars (O 1778 and an electric), a violin with a piezo pickup, and a flute with an onboard mic.

The software that seems to look good is the Cakewalk Guitar Tracks, and the hardware that has been recommended is either a PCI card with breakout box like the M Audio Delta 44 , or a USB box like the M Audio Fast Track .

Can these types of products can be used to make decent stereo recordings? Can the audio be blended so that it isn't just left or right or both, but it could be placed anywhere?

When one track is recorded, is it simple to play it back while simultaneously recording the next track? Is this what is meant by zero latency in the product descriptions?

Are the USB units sufficiently powered, especially when using the phantom power out?

These sound cards will still require a preamp for all the instruments, yes?

Will you be able to make decent stereo recordings....yes. I have heard some amazing recordings done on less.

Will it sound professional quality....no...but unless your trying to put out a CD, who cares.

I would recommend a good DI box for the instruments since they all have onboard electronics.

Zero latentcy through a computer is a myth. The hardware may have zero latency but it still has to be processed through the computer and the software. Anything under 10-12ms should be ok and under 6ms is really good.
