Location: cambridge, mass. usa | Im an owner of an older (80s) non-cutaway folk model with wonderful response and loud acoustic output.
Looking for similar puppy in a cutaway (deep bowl), and it seems the 2077 LX Deep Contour is one of the few cutaways that will project as well acousticly. I never buy new instruments, so Id love to hear from anyone who has owned/played this model or similar. My old ($75 paid) Ovation has spoiled me, and I couldnt find anything in Guitar Center that had that kind of acoustic response. However, GC had no deep bowl new models on the wall... |

Location: south east Michigan | The "old fashioned" deep bowl is only applied to a few current high end production models. I have never seen a new deep bowl in any GC, ever.
I have played maybe 5 different contour bowl models....the 3 acoustics I own all have deep bowls.
IMO...the contour performs just a smiggen under the old deep bowl. However, I do have the reputation of being kind of a deep bowl snob. ;)
In the end a lot will depend on the other features the guitar has. |

My Al DiMeola-II has one.
The bottom line might be...would I ever buy a contour bowl?....Oh yes. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I also think I'm a deep bowl snob. I finally got to try a contour bowl at the NW Gathering. Our GC never stocked any. The sound was fine, but I didn't like the feel. I was a couple inches shy of having my gut fill out the contour, so the notch cut into my ribs. Still felt better than a box guitar, but it may be a sad reflection on the times that it seems to be made for overweight people.
My daughter also didn't like the feel. She said they are not made for someone with boobs. I don't think she was talking about the guys who wear cocoanut bras. |

Location: Pennsylvania | I don't know that much about Ovations yet, but i think my 2006-FKOA has a deep bowl. I got it at GC too, but thats only because someone ordered it speacial and changed their mind.
I've never played one of the older deep bowls, but this one sounds great (to me anyway).

BTW, I do like the sound and feel of my '05 contour bowl as well. The single sound hole on the '05 seems to project back to the player more clearly than the multi hole 1768. Both sound spectacular through a PA. Both sound spectacular acoustically, for that matter.
I think the guitar you're looking at is similar to my '05. Go for it, I say. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | StandingO and I have very similar opinions on this matter ... To my (our) ears I can hear NO difference between a Deep Cutaway Roundback (DCR)and a Contour Bowl (CB). But the problem is that it's almost impossible to A/B compare them on identical guitars.
The preference on DCR vs. CB (to me/us) comes down to comfort. Here the members seem to be divided. Me/us personally, I LOVE THE CB. Seated, it sits squarely on your leg, no fussing around. Standing up, it rests nice and flush against your torso and points itself at the audience, not at the heavens. I basically feels like a normal woodbox guitar. I think that's why I like it, because I do switch back and forth between my O's and M's and they position themselves basically the same to me. Others do NOT like the CB, which is fine. I've read comments like, It sits so upright that it digs into my bicep/arm. Valid comments, it all depends how you hold your guitars and what feels best in your hands. The CB does feel different that the DCR, no doubrt about it.
By the way, one COSMETIC difference in favor of the DCR (who but me would care, right?) - you can get some guitars with the Deep Bowl in NON CUTAWAY versions (like the 1719 Custom Legend). To me, a cutaway acoustic guitar just looks WRONG. It may not take too much away from the sound (some would disagree), but to me it looks like you own 80% of a guitar.
Personal opinion - within a few years the roundbacks will be completely discontinued and everything will be CB. They'll come up with a shallower bowl version of it as well. Just a hunch. I also predict they'll start making it in a "woodgrain" type finish. So the guitar feels and looks more like a normal wooden box guitar. I think the psychology here is that if it looks and feels more like a Martin/Taylor/Whatever, people (woodbox crowd) will think that it SOUNDS more like one as well.

Location: CT | Nothing but wood grained contour bowls on the horizon? I'm going to stock up now before the "Roundback" is extinct. I have all 3 - Deep bowl non cutaway(Custom Legend), and cutaway Mid depth (12 string), and cutaway super shallow 6. Different guitars for different things. All is right with the world. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | My first O was a deep bowl non cutaway. Loved the sound, which is why I'm still here, but awkward to play up the neck.
I now insist on the cutaway as I'm playing lots more riffs up the neck than I did all those years ago.
Do they (Ovation) make a non cutaway contour bowl? |
