For What It's Worth,

A friend of mine and I will be playing in Church this week ...I'll be playing my 2001 Redwood Collector's (Thanks Al!) and he'll be playing his new Martin HD-28 Herringbone.... both will be mic'd, not plugged in... a true head-to-head comparison- both have that much sought after woodiness..... we'll see who wins!

Sorry Tim, my money is on the HD28. Not really familiar with the 2001 redwood, but the HD28 is one of Martin's biggest guns.

Hey Tim,

You're down there where my Dad lives...he leads worship at his father-in-law's Baptist church in Fontana. He's one of the smart ones...plays a Custom Balladeer 12-string.

You know the area much?

Trust me, in that situation it's got very little to do with the guitar and everything to do with microphone placement. Usually a miked multi-hole Ovation will have 2 to 3db headroom over a centre hole guitar if the mic is in the place most people expect produces the best sound (though never does!) Sorry if that was a little cryptic.

Yeah Tim, and ask your buddy to show you his internal tuner on the HD28, that will show him!

Just make lots of noise while he plays around with his pitch pipe!

Hmm ... this sounds like a tough choice for me ...

What Brian T said ... the HD-28 is one of Martin's big guns, and mine is one sweet sounding instrument.

I recently joined the praise team in our church (finally!) and I would normally play one of my Martins during rehearsal -- unplugged that is. During Sunday service, I prefer my one and only Ovation -- plugged in -- it doesn't sound any better than that. Our praise team leader plays with a DC-16GTE, and both our guitars complement each other well.

D-28's are wonderful guitars, but I've played my 1537 in groups where people are playing them, and have never felt under gunned.

2 weeks ago I played my FD14 next to somebody who was playing a D size Santa Cruz. His was an impressive guitar, but so was mine...

Several times I've called my 1537 the "Martin Killer".

If we show up with two or three of them, do you think they'll ask us too "turn it down"? :p :D :p :D

I just had the same thing with my 1718. Last Sunday, I played it plugged in next to a guy with a Taylor 414ce with the expression system...left him WAY in the dust for tone.

Tim, I've spent a lot of time around Ontario and the whole IE area. My dad used to work in Orange until recently, and he made frequent trips to Ontario. Nice area...if you wouldn't miss the green of the NW.
