When I learn a song, I grab the free tab and buy the album. Well, I guess I won't do that anymore, but was I really hurting Johnny Cash? Or the Ramones? Or Marty Robbins? Those guys are dead. Do you think they want my money while they're in heaven? Or would they like me to sing their songs? |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I bought the official Hal Leonard Eric Clapton book to get the tabs and they sucked. It was easier to learn it by listening to the CD, which I also bought. My daughter downloaded a much better tab to Tears in Heaven. I also like to buy the CD and find a tab to see if it helps me learn the song. |

Location: Oregon | www.wholenote.com Is my favorite. Although their tab part is shut down due to lawsuits, they ahve a Groovebuilder thing to jam to and a lot of different lesson things. I love it.
I also use cliff's suggested site as well. |

Location: Central Massachusetts | Yeah Ultimate Guitar Tabs is a Russian site, so like AllOfMP3.com, they claim they are "legal" because they pay a fee to some Russian government office somewhere. They're basically out of the grasp of the RIAA folks so they should be around for a while. The other tab and lyric sites seem to be folding up shop rather than putting up a fight. It's a shame one of these places doesn't hold their ground, as it sounds like the RIAA are on shakey legal footing here. |

Location: PDX | I can't quite articulate exacly what bothers me about this. I can understand the Napster thing. But to limit tabs seems to border on limiting speech -- how else can musicians talk about music except through some sort of notation like tabs or standard music notation?

I understood why the "industry" wanted to put an end to the "Napsters" of the world, but this is a bit much. I personally use "e-chords" which is a site that charges a nominal fee. I don't mind paying it because it's organized, accurate, and has a lot of useful tools. |

Given the current climate, I'd be suprised if the free sites survive, even though I think it's wrong headed of the music publishers. |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | I'm torn on the issue. There's the intellectual property rights of the writers (and the pinstripe scum who leach off them) versus the Free Speach natural joy of sharing.
No way publishers are going to back off, they're fighting for the survival of their industry. It's curious and funny to see a large industry (which is also full of small businesses) being backed into a corner by thousands/millions of faceless individuals. |

Lawyers base a lot on precident and history so here is my speal.
For about the last thousand years or so popular music was transported by P2P networks (Bards, Minstrels, troops, etc.) and while the language and words changed the basic tune or melody remained intact.
Much of this networking would occur in drinking establishments that would encourage the use of said tunes to promote positive atmosphere and sale of product.
In summary - the Performer (Musician/Author/Producer) had open access to tunes and lyrics and received royalties based upon the immediate performance only, i.e.; got paid, laid or splayed.
The twist today is that the Performer relies less on the actual performance and more on the resale of said performance. They are also enforcing limitations on the use of material they initiated, re-initiated or plagarized themselves.
We have inverted the Music Trade in the last 50 years.
It can't make sense... it's wrong! |

I would hate to loose these sites. It's so easy to find any odd ball song you might want.
For instance...I had perhaps unhealthy desire to play that old song Green Tamborine..."watch the jingle jangle start to shine..." As soon as I remember who did it, I'll find the words and chords in a snap. Now where in the world would I be able to buy that information in a songbook or at an internet site???
I know I could sit down...work out the chords...and type up the lyrics. But that takes more time than the song is probably worth to me. With a tab site I can try it out real quick and either continue or move on to something else. Lazy??? No... this is supposed to be the age of information. There are a ga-zillion things we do differently now just because we can.
Come on you guys in the suits....Pleeeease let me play Green Tamborine. |

Location: East Tennessee | Tab sites are a useful tool especially for the Non Professional Musician. They save us time,(which we don't have a lot of because we have jobs).
I can listen to most any song I want to play and figure out the chords, type a lyric sheet and go.
A good tab site saves me that time. Thats it period.
Sme of the Tabs I gotten online aren't that accurate anyway and I have to tweek the song a little. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | I hope the tab sites survive, but it often comes down to "ya get what ya pay for". I'll admit, though, I've bought more than one official music/tab book and found that it was WRONG. Using a tab as a starting point and then working it out yourself from there is usually the best way, IMHO.
The bubblegum song that is my weakness is not "Green Tamborine", but "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy". :D
