Did we ever decide on the topic?

Was it gonna be valentine/love songs?

I got a tune almost cranked out but I need to put SWMBO on the words so I can work them into the melody/chorus and then start recording.

48 tracks takes a while ;)

Was a decision made or should I just shut up and go away for a while?

I think topic and timing is goona be up to the producer, whoever that might be and whenever that might be. It's a lot of work. But we could also do this virally through the ning site if we wanted. Sort of like Beal's Wednesday Night Music Club thing, except we could have a monthly deal and then on the same day everyone who wants to participate uploads their songs and they hit the top of the player on the main ning page. This would also eliminate the need to do just originals, and it could be a lot more dynamic. For instance, we could say Halloween songs and we'll all upload the songs to our profiles on October 25th.

Just an idea

Did you mean to say "virally"? Recording scares me enough without the risk of disease.

I talked with Dave, Al, and Beal a few months ago about an idea similar to this. The general consensus was that monthly was too often but the idea had merit.

Maybe we can kick it around. Maybe quarterly submissions on the "social site" with an annual "best of" cd from the songs submitted.

Maybe set up a "group" page. That way the songs could be uploaded by the administrator to the group page and all the tunes would all be kept together as a group.

Lotta maybes......Maybe Bobbo could administer and run the group.

Let me take this under advisement. I think monthly is fine for some people, quarterly better for most, and annually for the rest. More frequency would force us to spend more time playing and less time emulating Phil Spector. :)

That's interesting.
We upload all our songs on the same day.
Then we can download them from the website.
So the producer would be in charge of just setting the date and topic? Then whatever we upload is on us.

Problem is doesn't that shortciruit the revenue aspect of this?

Edit. Just reread it. So at the beginning of the year, we would have a junta pick the songs that would go onto to the cd? And then that would be the revenue producer?

It kinda' takes away the whole "novelty" of compiling a physical, tangible CD, tho.

Every AssWipe (and his brother) can (and does) put "music" on their MySpace page (Good AND Bad).

(IMO), after a while, it'll turn into
". . oh yeah, THAT's (z-z-z-z-z-z-z . . ) "nice" . . . "

Well, if it was quarterly...

Say Bobbo runs the show and posts up 10 anonymous tunes for that quarter. Leave them up for a couple weeks to a month and have a blind poll where you vote for your favorite 3-4 cuts. (Blind meaning the results are concealed so no one is influence by current "favorites" or feels bad if their tune is not on top).

When the new quarterly topic is picked, the old tunes get taken down and the favorite tunes are revealed. These 3-4 go onto the "official CD". At the end of the year we have 12-16 tunes and maybe the rest of the CD is filled out with tunes from the quarterly picks that are just fan favorites or the picks of the administrators of the project.

Wouldn't have to interfere with the "official OFC CD" that Dave and Cliff have been putting out.

just a thought.

This sorta thing only works when some Little Red Hen says, "I'll do all the work."

Volunteering someone else never works.

You got that little red hen email too?

Funny wasn't it?

Of course it was political so we can't talk about it. Miles and Al closed them so fast this time they didn't get the full group of "the Usual Suspects" and I feel left out.

That's a great Band name, but probably been done, right?

I'd say semiannually. Do we want to do Love songs, twisted and otherwise?

I have an album by The Usual Suspects, but they're a different group than these guys. The vinyl I have is from the late 80's when The Usual Suspects were a group of SF session type musicians. I'll dig it out when I'm home and post more details.

I may take something on. I really just want to have something that encourages people to play thier instrument and leave some sort of legacy work. Max posted up a song on the ning site that we put together in a matter of a few hours of work over a few days (actually, it was all done over the Labor Day weekend). It was for the most part a live recording, so you get the good the bad and the warts. No matter, it's the fun that counts. Even if it sucks, we don't care. It's about the music and the bond we have from making it. It is now forever.

Stephen's plan sounds too complex, and I don't relish the idea of picking "the best". Too subjective for a volunteer situation. And who's to say the judges have any concept of good and bad? I always hated those high-school popularity contests, too. Like Al and Miles have said ... NO POLITICS!

Actually, the bass-player in that band (Mike Trickett) is a good friend of mine!! He was my counter-part in our Bahston office and we became good fiends.
He's been to TWO of the OFC TourJams! (the first one - at the the firehouse, and the first on at the ski lodge - he played Kim's Adamas bass with Brad&BrianT.).

Well, if the shoe fits ...

I remember Mike. He played bass with me (and also when Cliff played Squeezebox) at the fire house and he came up and sang one of the verses from The Weight. He's a good player!

The second time he came, he brought another bandmate, "Norm!". There's a picture of Norm holding the koa "blowhole" prototype somewhere around . . .

Bobbo,
I'm good with whatever you want to take on.
I was just throwing wood on the fire.

I am like you.....just looking for something that will encourage us to write, play, leave a legacy.

Having a topic and a deadline will encourage me to quit sitting on my ass and work towards a finished product.

I currently have as many unfinished songs as I have excuses.....and that's way too many!
