Option #1: an '89 Natural 1718 Elite in great condition, or; Option #2: a 2006ish Burgundy 2077LX Contour in like new condition... What would you be inclined to choose, and why? Now, I know it's kinda an apple to orange sorta comparison - due to the difference in age, electronics, design, etc., but they both have a few similarities as well (nut-width, deep bowl, 14 fret, pick-up, etc.). So, with your vast collective experience and wisdom - help me weigh the pro's & con's so I can feel like I've done my due diligence in this quandry. Some have made comparisons of the 1718 to a 1537 (which is pretty well respected!), but the 2077 is, well, a Legend... I'm pretty fond of the double epi/non-c/a of the Elite, and am not sure I'm too warm on the Transparent Bungundy thing - though I'm not sure I've see one in person (can you see the grain through the transparency?). You can see from my herd-list the sorta flavors I already have, and perhaps can offer ideas of which guitar might be a good compliment. Thanks a $1,000,000 for your thoughtful words of insight~

Members here can give all sorts of Opinion but, it really up to your preference, what sounds good to you feels good. I happen to own a 2077 black. Love the guitar!! never played a 1718 although I'm assumming here that it's not much different then a 1719 "Specs" wise which I have played.I prefer the 2077.

It may look like a 1537, but it doesn't sound like one. I've owned both and there's a vast difference in the acoustic tone. The 2077LX has better acoustic tone, a far superior pre-amp, and an on-board tuner whcih once you have one you get spoiled by the "inconvenience" of using a tuner that you have to plug in to. The Op-Pro pre-amp is much better for plugged in sound than the OP-24. The 2077LX is a much more valuable guitar also. As for the color, you can see the grain thru the finish. Hope that helps, however once the deal is done there will come a day when you'll wish you kept the GC.

Just cuz I would like to have a Natural 1718 (then I would sell my black one). In monetary value the contour LX is definitely worth more. (So get the 2077LX) No one has asked, so I will... Why would you trade a vintage GC 12 for either of them? Ooo, Ooo! Tell them that you want BOTH of them!

Joined: February 2003 Posts: 398 Location: Gig Harbor, Washington | WoW! Thanks for all the feedback!!! The results so far are: (4) No Trade - Keep It! (4) 2077 (3) 1718 My MotherShip Guru says go for the 1718, but with folks like CWK2 & Dave saying NO GO - it's pretty hard to decide... Since the original post, the 2077 has gracefully bowed out, and the 1718 wants to go outright sale (rather than trade)... So - I'm still in a quandry which route to take (though I shouldn't keep the 12 AND buy the 1718). Anyone got any opinions on a BCS DLX 1578??? Many Mahalos to Y'allos~

It's like a couple of years ago the 97 Collectors would show up for sale either here or the bay fairly regularly. Now they are scarce and the wide neck. Forget it.

It's like a woman, you get bored with her, get a new one but it doesn't always turn out the way you'd imagine. That said, the only way to conquer a temptation like that is to give in. But beware ... there's no turning back.

I was forever cleaning that thing and two minutes later it looked like it had been passed around a Kindergarten class room. Beware of dark glossy topped guitars.

That said, I know what you mean. I didn't like cracking the case on it. It's a museum piece. I'm very happy with the situation I ended up with, and I play the new Custom Elite LX 12 just about every day now, and the Mosrite will be showing up Friday. Both very unique though. All my BS aside, my opinion is that the LX is a way better guitar over the 1718.
