Hello,

I'm new to the site. This is a great resource!

I've owned a couple of Ovations through the years and had not had one for 10 or so years. I was at the Guitar Center in Spokane Wa yesterday and fell in love with an Ovation that I had to take home.

It was the GC178LX Elite in Black with the natural leaf oposite the cut away. They were blowing it out for $349.00! I could'nt beleive it. There were three other guys in the guitar room when the sales guy came back with the price and I knew if I hung it back up it would be gone.

Great guitar, It will be right up there with my Taylors! I'm running it through the Roland AC90 what a pair!

Welcome and congrats!

I've almost bought one of those online more than once. Do they have any more in the Spokane store? That's a steal of a price.

You're about the 4th OFC member from Idaho. Welcome. If you get down to Moscow, look up tdeej. We haven't heard from him in awhile, but he has a great collection of Ovations.
The GCs are special editions for Guitar Centers. They are blowing out other Elites and Balladeers before they move production of some of the models overseas. That might be the case with the one you got. Whatever, you got a great deal. It should be right up there with or ahead of your Taylors for a much better price.

WOW! That's a steal...

I just had marenostrum's (Riccardo) in my hands prior to shipment over to him and what a beaut of a git (and I'm not fond of black gits)! She swings and sings...

Congrats!

BTW, welcome to the 'O' hive mind.

Ydna, welcome fellow Washingtonian!

I played one last weekend. The Kirkland GC had the GC178LX and a 1778LX for USA examples.

I grabbed them both down and played them side by side. Very similar in tone, very much like my 1778LX with the plugs in the lower bout holes. The 1778LX cost me 3X what you paid for that sweet thing!

My review on the GC178LX:

Really the difference between the 1778LX Elite and the GCLX is the finish. The GC model has an unbound fretboard and a maple neck. I'm not sure how Ovation works, but I do know that some other companies use the cosmetically flawed wood for soundboards that they'll paint. Doesn't mean the wood's any less in regards to it's tonal quality though. I personally like the natural look of the 1778LX-4 better than a gloss black, and the bound ebony on mahogany neck with the gold hardware is nicer in my eye too, but really if you're looking for the best bargain for a new USA made O, these are it.

Well, actually, Al's 07 Collector's deal is probably a bit better with the electronics, BCS, and finish work. My opinion though

BTW, I believe the one here was going for $500 or so, maybe $599.

Very nice guitar indeed. Congrats!

Side note - It had been a long while since I've seen a USA made O in a Guitar Center around here. Did they have more USA models at the Spokane store?

Wow,

What a welcome!

The other Ovations at the Spokane store were in the lower ranges. My reason for going over ot GC in the first place was to play one of the low end Applause for $299.00 with the idea of settinng it up with the Roland GK-3 so I could have a designated Midi equiped controller in my studio. I actually played several and was getting ready to put down the cash. I asked Josh the sales guy if he had any other black ovations that were nicer with a better feel. He came back with the box and origianlly thought that there was a mistake when the computer told him the price. So he checked with the manager and sure enough my lucky day!

Don't think I'll put the GK3 on this one!

A couple questions for you more experienced ovation players.

I thought the OP-Pro would mute the ouput when in operation mine does not seem to mute. am i missing somthing?

also, has anyone had any luck moving the front strap button to the heel of the neck where the neck and cutaway come together. the would help eliminate the slip out. I felt up in ther eand I believe there is a wood block in that general area.

Thanks

Don't be afraid of the GK mounting. I use double faced tape and take them off, put them on with regularity. The bigger problem is deciding how you're going to close the case.

If by slip out, you mean the strap coming off, I would replace the button with a Strap-Lok system. This is standard on the higher end Ovations, but it would be a simple matter to put on your guitar.

My concerns on mounting the Gk3 was the fact that there is no block to mount the control module to at the but end of the guitar. I didn't want to screw into the ovations shell without having something else to re-enforce.

the strap button is not slipping off. The way they mount the strap button above the neck causes a more pronounce kick out of the guitar do to the rounded back. My last ovation was a shallow bowl so it did not create as much of an angle.

I'm going to mount the strap button under the neck at the heel to gain a little more control of the guitar.

ydna,

I know what you mean about those mid-bowls, but before you go screwing into things, try a nice $25 fix, the Standing Ovation . I use it on my 1778LX. Funny, I don't seem to need it for a deep bowl.

For mounting the Roland control module, you could use double-sided tape too. I wouldn't do it to any of my Os, but I have done it to a Peavey Predator.

I stopped at our local GC Friday on the way home and they had one for $349.97. It played well, but was missing the high E string. It appeared to be their regular price. Let me know if anyone is interested. I could probably get the local store to ship it to yours or could buy it and ship it myself. I suspect that price doesn't include the case, though.
I tried to dash off a quick post about this Friday night before I left town, but apparently I was so quick that I forgot to hit "Add Reply".
