Definitely talk to Alpep at Lost Art Vintage. He has a line on some 07's that are an incredible deal. I bought from him and couldn't be happier with the whole deal from start to finish.

I recently got an 07 and it is a really nice instrument. The intonation is the best I have ever heard on any acoustic. Period. Not that I have an enormous database of megabucks boutique guitars to compare it to, but intonation is something that I am picky about, and my 07 is as good as a guitar can be without individually adjustable saddles. Maybe mine is unusual, but I'm guessing not. The open cowboy chords are in tune, and notes above the 12th fret are in tune across the strings. The setup was very nice from the factory, better than any other O I've played or bought. They obviously put more effort into fine adjustment than they do on their run-of-the-mill O. The deep contour has a tremendous sound. Just full and deep and clear. The VIP preamp sounds awesome. I haven't fallen in love with the images on the VIP yet, but that is not very important to me anyway. The dummy plug for the VIP is silly and annoying if you want to tune it when it isn't plugged into an amp. Not a big deal, but not a favorite "feature" of the Ovation preamp family. 1/4" and XLR outs. The XLR is really nice for live situations when plugging into the house PA system. My daughter's bandmate has a GC178LX which I get to play. Her friend leaves it here at our house regularly. It is a very nice example of mid bowl LX. Great neck, great OpPro preamp (no dummy plug). The black finish with single sided epaulet looks classy. The top is an excellent grade of wood with an excellent sound. The midbowl is comfortable to play sitting or standing. Bowl preference is really an individual thing, but also it is an acquired accomodation. Whichever bowl you get, you will learn to play it comfortably. If someone wants a midbowl LX, the GC178LX would be a fine choice, and reportedly they can be found for a very good price right now. I would strongly endorse Al's 07 FRG, though. For the money, you will never regret getting the 07 from Al. You won't ever regret the GC178LX either, but for the small extra $ the 07 is a better deal on a much better guitar.

Joined: August 2008 Posts: 32 Location: Glendale, AZ | I bought the GC178LX which I got for $449 from a Guitar Center here in Phoenix. I have never played a 07, so I can't say how they compare. I can only tell you that I'm happy with the GC178LX. The 07 may very well be a better guitar, but I had the money for the GC178LX, and I would not have had the bucks for the 07. Plus I'm basically a beginning level player, so this one will be fine for me for quite a while. If the costs had been equal, I'm not sure which I would have gone with. But from what knowledgeable people here have said, the 07 is a better guitar. Sorry. My "I don't know" answer is not much help. :)

The VIP is good, but I have not really dug into all it can do. The sound plugged in is superior to anything else I have heard, and not plugged is super.

Even then it's better overall. Throw in that you can get one at an excellent price from Al and it comes dang near to being a no-brainer. Since you already have a contour LX, you might get the GC178LX, especially if you're not a VIP fan. The mid-bowl LX's have a sound all their own which I love. Having said that, I'd go with the 07C. Of my O's, it's the one I reach for 1st.

Joined: August 2008 Posts: 7 Location: Texas | Thanks so much for the advice and insight. I'm new, obviously, to this forum....thrilled to find it! Just getting back into playin'...thanks to my Son and his new found interest. I'd always hoped he'd come around. My Mother purchased my first O in '76...still have it in mint condition. In response to buying both, I think I will...just have to find a way to keep it from the bride and slip it on her when she's in one of those accepting moods. Thanks again.

Good luck, I just ordered the GC178LX loved it when I played at a local GC. Unfortunately it was the last one they had so I decided to order it from one of the vendors online.
