I recently bought one of these reissue preamps and built it into my Elite 1537-1 yesterday. What a difference compared to the original FET preamp! More volume, more punch, more crisp ... Boys, these are worth the money!

Karl

PS. Just in case someone needs one: I will put the original preamp on ebay soon.

Are these no longer available from the factory?

I replaced the preamp in my 1537 with the reissue several years ago. Huge improvement. $189 is less than what I paid....

The change out (in a 1537) doesn't seem like it would be that involved. Is it as simple as it seems?

Hmm...the last time I played with a few guys plugged in I will admit that I was just a hair disappointed in the 1537's preamp. Big improvement you say...? Hmm...

Weas, you gotta remember that the original 2 knobber preamp was designed and built in the late 1970's. It's over 30 years old. Lots of improvement in technology since then.

I used to play with a guy who had a Larivee with an L.R. Baggs p/u in it. It sounded better than my 1537 plugged in. Go with the newer technology.....

When I recently had the factory makeover on my 1537, I spent the extra (I think it was about $180)money to have them upgrade the electronics with the newer 2 knob stuff. It DOES make a big difference. If you ever send an instrument in for work and it has the old FET system, spend the extra little bit to have it upgraded. It looks the same, but IS a lot better. In the mean time, here's a chance to snag one and do it yourself.

Thanks, Vince. Been saving a couple pennies for something else but may have to use a couple of them here.

Well, here's a plug for the original. My 1651 Legend Ltd from 1981/1982 has the original FET with the stacked controls. Presuming this is still the same preamp as the two-knobbers, it certainly holds its own against other more modern models to my ears. Of course, I typically also have more pedals and a bigger amp, and what's a little feedback among friends?

Weaser, Santa says you were good and put a two-knobber off to the side for you...

Bryan, thanks for posting this.
I want them too for my 1681, the original had an awful hum on the mono output and the volume control cracks, but I also was too late, it was gone. They don't show up very often and are expensive, so I decided to upgrade the guitar in this way:

That is another world of sound...incredible!!

Bernie, that's a smart way to go if you can swing the bucks. Your guitar is now going to be compatible with new preamps that come out in the future. And while your guitar is a great one, it's not historically significant so you didn't hurt the montatary value of it at all....

Nice Job. Did the same thing on my 1581, but had to replace the OP 24. It DOES sound great.
