Location: chattanooga | Hello all. I have a problem Ive never had before and would like a 2nd or 3rd opinion please. I apologize that its not about Ovations, though I haved loved them for years. I just purchased a used Breedlove (Atlas series) on the bay. It plays nice but buzzes a lot above the 9th fret. The action on the E strings at the 12th fret is 3/32" and 1/8". I need to raise the action slightly but dont want to shim the saddle because the bridge is 3/8"thick and the saddle is a good 5/16" above that. I'm thinking the neck angle could be off but not sure. Appreciate any tips, opinions, etc. Many thanks. |

Press down simultaneously on the E string at frets 1 and 14.
Check the height over the two middle frets. The string should float about (hair more than) 1/64 above those two frets.
If it doesn't, add or subtract relief as necessary. If that doesn't work and other factors such as unseated/unfinished frets are eliminated... Could very well be, the neck joint is off. |

The string height you measured is about right, could be a 64th low on the treble side.
Rule of thumb is 3/32 and 5/64.
What gauge strings?

Location: chattanooga | Thanks for the input guys. The relief looks good. Strings feel like lights. The saddle just looks too high to me. I'll try to place a call to the folks at Breedlove tomorrow. Regards. |
