Random quote: “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” -Plato

I've been playing a version of "Company" by Dean Friedman for years. Today I finally sat down and thought shit, let me figure out the nice little finger picked intro.

So I look around the internet and I find a video by Dean talking about the songs origins. Turns out that he was writing the song with Snuffy Walden and he couldn't get the darn Beatles "Blackbird" intro out of his head. So Snuffy just says, shit how about playing it backwards? So that's it, the intro to "Company" is just "Blackbird" played backwards. Duh. With that little tidbit in hand it took all of 30 seconds to learn it.

Anyway, just goes to show that not everything is a well orchestrated plan. Sometimes a flashing moment is all it takes.

Eddie Floyd tells the tale of him and Steve Cropper sitting in the studio trying to come up with a hook for Knock on Wood. "We want a real knock out intro," says Eddie, "like you wrote for Midnight Hour." So Steve starts playing around with the same chords - plays them backwards and another classic was born.
Pretty good going to get two trillion selling songs out the same riff.
