The 1187 (called #47RI on this board) sounds much better than the 1687. One reason is the lighter bracing, another reason could be the bowl material. The 1187 bowl is made of hand-laid fiberglass whereas the 1687 bowl is molded. Just a thought.

They used the term Lyrachord since the end of the 60s when all the bowls were hand-laid. It's not only an expression for the molded bowls.

How do you quantify what your ear hears?

The old fiberglass bowls vibrate more than the later bowls. But there are other things involved besides just the bowl. I think the tops are slightly different in the construction as well, but I'm not certain as to how. I have no idea how to quantify sound. Anybody else want to jump in here?

Welcome Maliberd...
Maybe you need to get in touch with Jerome, an OFC member who is a fellow countryman of yours.

OK Charlie, for sure the bracing is the main contributory factor to the sound.

No, it's not. Bracing is only one of several important contributing factors, each just as important as the other. The sound of any guitar is the sum of it's parts. You could brace a plywood top anyway you like, but it won't make it sound like anything but ply.

The OFC guitars are supposed to be similar to the 47RIs but with electronics added and finished in a different color. Does this mean that the OFC guitar bowls also hand-laid fiberglass?

To my ears the 47RI and the OFC guitar actually sound quite different (I own both). There are many factors - presence of the preamp, hatch door in the bowl, different color paint, etc ... but I would guess the biggest factor is the saddle design and material.

There's no doubt about that, the two definately have their own voicing.

As for the rest of what makes what do what...I have no clue...different mojo ingredants I guees.

Dave, throw your SlotHead into the mix & you'll have 3 different "voices" . . .
