I always like NAMM shows like this last one whereby I go to the show and don't come home feeling the effects of GAS. I look at the guitars I have and feel very satisfied and fortunate.....

That's a nice feeling, ain't it? Good on you. I'm pretty much there myself.

In agreement for the most part. On the other hand, for certain models and gear where GAS already existed, the show only exascerbated the challenge of keeping the wallet tucked safely down deep in the pocket.

You're never done. Even when you think so, you're not done. Stuff you never anticipated can come swooping in out of nowhere. And you're faced with those game changing decisions. The gun is to your head and you think, well ... I didn't plan on this, and I can't justify this, but if I don't go it I'm probably going to regret it.

The question I always ask myself ... Is it better to live with the guilt of DOING IT, or to live with the guilt of NOT doing it.

Sometimes it's a tough call. Sometimes not.

NFW! How can you NOT be all gassed up after checking out all that cool and new gear? I'm gonna have to come over and check you guys for a pulse. I try, and I try, and I try, and I try ... I can't get no satisfaction.

Ok. There were a couple of things. One was the McPherson guitars. Liked them but they are expensive. Worth it? If 5K is chump change.

And the small amp Brad brought over to the house to play his SSB custom Adamas thru. That thing had a great tone.....

I'm probably gonna spring for one or the other of the vocal harmonizers we saw, but that was already on my short list before the show.

When you bring something other than "Take It Easy" to get-togethers.

I'll compromise and get the one where you can mute the lead and hear the pitch-corrected harmonies...

The ADD Cub by Phil Jones, discussed in depth here before, and prominently displayed at the PJ booth at NAMM along with the rest of their terrific gear.

Moody, Did you get to play any of those McPhersons? I've always wanted to play one to see how they sound and feel. If so ... what did you think?

I can answer for Paul.

He almost had to buy it cause of all the drool stains he put on it.

Paul had some "private time" in the acoustic booth with the 12 string proto. He even mentioned it (and the price) to his wife, who responded with an indulgent chuckle.
I played 4 or 5 of the 6 strings and liked them all, particularly a mahogany topped model.

I wiped most of them off. And I didn't leave my real name. I signed their guest card "Beal Kaman".

Stephen also hauled Wabbit and I around to look at vocal harmonizers. Now those were very cool.....

I can't even walk into a regular music store and not be gassed up. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if I attended a NAMM show.

The debilitating effects of GAS are relative to your situation. When you have one guitar and buy a second, that DOUBLES your guitar inventory. When you're up to 10 - 15 - 20 and you buy one, it's a smaller effect on the crowd.

It all goes back to the bottom line. The correct number of guitars is (all together now!) just - one - more.

First, they're very very heavy in the neck, due to the bracing. But it's so solid that it will never move. There's no way to adjust it.

The guitars really ring out, very full and loud. Good tone.

But they start at $5K. Is it better than my 87C or 1537? Yeah. Is it 5 times (based on price) better than my 87C or 1537? Not even close.

If I had the extra cash and could get one easily, I'd think about it. But as it stands, I'm not even thinking about it. In fact, I think I'll go play my 1537 and consider myself lucky......

Typical of most things. For a moderate price you can get something really nice. To get something even nicer the cost/performance/satisfaction curve gets less and less steep.

1.5 times the price for 40% more performance
2 times the price for 60% more performance
3 times the price for 70% more performance

and so on and so on

ecking out that last 5-10% can get ridiculously expensive.

After a tour at NAMM it's not unusual to suffer PTGAS.
