Joined: January 2009 Posts: 4535 Location: Flahdaw | I recently bought a PreSonus D.I. that came with free Studio One recording software. PreSonus used to come with Cubase, but they made the switch. Anyone used Studio One and have any impressions? (Obviously it seems a ton more complicated than Audacity, which I was just barely starting to get used to)

I'm sure it has it's quirks, but all the DAWs do. It's just a matter of getting used to where they position the controls, and maybe some cutsey terminology that the marketers came up with to "distinguish" their product.

I think you've got to just settle on one and get on and use it. I hate it when you spend all your time fiddling with the software and not ever getting round to actually recording. For me Cubase 4 is simple enough so I can get on and spent 99% of the time recording. As G8r says they're all much of a muchness these days. I ought to add that I'm just recording a single track, an acoustic guitar so I'm using a sledge hammer to peel a grape!

I suggest you find one you like that backed by a decent company and userbase. I have been using Sonar (Cakewalk) since it was a DOS program. The value of knowing a product inside and out when it comes to DAW software is priceless, especially if you want to share your project with others for creative purposes. And one final note... very important.. MAKE BACKUPS AND FINAL MIX'S OF EVERYTHING !!!! This is NOT for disaster recovery, but for posterity. "Back in the day" as they say, we used to make copies of cassettes' of just about everything. They were cheap, and rarely listened to again, but we had them. Ten to Twenty years later it's fun to pop them in and take a listen. Don't loose that history and memories. In 10 to -20 years from now, you shouldn't be looking back to "gee... too bad I never made an extra copy of the CD we recorded". This rule applies to digital photos too, but that's for another forum. Just think of the above the next time you rummage through a box of old tapes and just decide to listen to one.

I would have thought I'd hear a big difference in my playing ability. Nope.Ten to Twenty years later it's fun to pop them in and take a listen. Don't loose that history and memories.
