Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | You can use the pickups without a pre-amp. The mini-humbuckers really sound better with the pre-amp, but the large single coil Toroidal's sound fine with or without the pre-amp they just sound a little different without. The pre-amp is not so much a boost but more of an active EQ.. More or less bass and treble as opposed to just attenuating the bass and treble like you would with a passive system. |

Location: Upper Left USA | Yes, the pickups work just fine.
You won't get the same tones as when "active" but they fundimentally just HB pups. |

Location: usa | OK I know I still have the pots ...one with a big brown extra pot connected to the bottom of one of the pots but a "Board" like a circuit bread board somewhere on the inside of the guitar??? Well I was going to ask how to wire these pups "active" but I recon without the board pre amp I am SOL...nope just check and no circuit board...if anybody needs these pots probably wont use them to wire these pickup non active |

Location: NW Washington State | It's not too unusual to find these with the electronics removed. Do you have the original pickups? You can see some here: http://www.ovationtribute.com/Electric%20Series/Breadwinner%20&%20D... |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Could you post a picture. It sounds like you are already wired passive. All of the original controls are mounted on the circuit board.
THere are some pictures in this link.

Location: usa | Miles...was thinking about you this morning...
I have to drive about 80 miles one way to pick up some toboggan sleds for my wife....more on that later
But YES, was thinking about your response about "active" design by ovation was to "boots" EQ thus so my stories "I haven't replaced my batteries for 12 years" yes the pickups still work but you haven't heard the proper EQ for about 11 years". I do remember this now so I thought your response was dead on...and I appreciate it!
Much to be said about this guitar but mostly it ALL was my own fault! although it was some idiot in 1984 that replaced my pickup it was me that gave him the pre amp and said "do away with dm giant knobs"....I will post a pic tomorrow...when I get back I teach guitar week nights and Tuesday and Thurs I practice with my band after wards...any and all your comments will greatly be appreciated...thanks
