About a year ago I purchased a 1717 Legend of ebay, and when I received it I realized there was a "hump" on the guitar where the neck joined the body. The guitar sounded fine except if you played above the 5th fret there was a horrible buzz. The guitar has a bolt on neck, so I tried shimming at the neck and a number of different combinations of settings that my limited skills would allow,as well as a few suggested on this board, all to no avail. I breifly spoke with a luthier who quoted over the phone a $4-500 repair bill and months of waiting would be involved. Due to many positive recommendations from this board, I decided to bite the bullet and send the guitar to the factory to see what they could do as it seemed to be getting worse (the fret buzz) After a number of daily e-mail conversations with John I received my guitar last week after only a few short weeks (amazing as it had to cross the border twice which sometimes takes weeks in itself)I am absolutely amazed. They did not totally correct the hump, however I did not ask them to. But the fretboard is straight as an arrow, amazingly low action, and the sound is boomingly huge. There are no dead spots and no fret buzz right up to the body. The sustain on this thing is stunning. I have no idea what allows the sustain to ring on forever, maybe the mass, as it weighs about twice that of my 1111 I don't know if John or anyone from the factory reads these posts or not, but if they do I cannot thank them enough, and the members of this board as well for steering me in the right direction on this matter. If anyone is sitting on the fence in terms of sending an Ovation guitar back to the factory I will personally give my utmost recommendation to the factory for their amazing skills and you will not be disappointed. They also added new strings, polished everywhere, and specially the tuners which I didn't notice before have an embossed type of finish on them which is amazingly brilliant, all for less than 1/2 of originally expected cost(I'm unsure if I'm supposed to say the amount...PM me if you need to know) Before they sent it back, John also asked me if there were any other issues besides the fret buzz that I would like corrected. It is after all more than 20 years old and has a few dings and a minor crack,(which I think add to the beauty of the guitar) however I declined. | ||
