Although there is some disagreement on this, Jackson Browne apparently wrote this after his 1st wife's suicide, following a sometimes violence-filled marriage. Regardless of what prompted it, in my opinion it's a masterpeice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIlojcd3Pzk&feature=related

I do recall that much of his 1976 LP "The Pretender" was about/influenced by that tragedy. (That is still one of my all-time favorite JB LPs. It was deep and somewhat disturbing, but brilliant, IMHO.)

We did play "I thought I was a child", "Rock Me On the Water", "Take it Easy" But if I'm not mistaken, Late For the Sky (1974) was put together before Phyllis even died (1976)

Did you see "For Everyman" at the end of his PBS special? Loved that one too. I heard that he uses guitars made from woods from sustainable forests. Michelle

I'm more inclined to believe the bio in IMDB... "Her mother, Nancy Farnsworth, asked Jackson to peruse an unfinished song she had written, while he and Phyllis vacationed in Paris after the "Late For The Sky" tour. Jackson liked the lyrics and incorporated them into a song that became "Here Come Those Tears Again."" "Browne channeled his loss and depression into the production of his fourth album, "The Pretender." Phyllis is the subject of at least three songs written by Jackson Browne -- "Ready or Not," "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate," and "In the Shape of a Heart.""
