Long story short:

My old laptop went kaput. I removed the hard drive which was undamaged. I then purchased one of THESE and now have not only my old data but also an external 80 Gig HD (5" x 3" x1/4") for my new VAIO and the desktop.

It uses two USB ports, one for power, the other for data. I blew out the old operating system software and moved some critical items (i.e. guitar pics) onto the new LT.

All need not be lost...

Good move. Most people give/sell/throw-away their old computers without even thinking to securely erase the hard drive. This is a good way to keep your data and keep it safe.

You shouldn't have to connect it to 2 usb ports, though??

I have the Seagate version, and it DOES require two ports, as well . . .

I bought one of those cases a few years ago and put an old 40 gig laptop drive from my IBM in it. I use it like a big flash drive when I have to move a lot of data between computers. It just takes one usb cable, self powered through the port. It will work on any usb port, but better on a 2.0

I was told that the dual USBs reduce the heat buildup that occurs on a single port. It was also recommended to use the motherboard mounted ports as opposed to the case mounted ones (usually closer to the front) due to rigidity.

USB is too slow and expensive. The data has to travel all over the Universe before it gets where it's going, and with the price of grains rising the way they are, Serial is running about a dollar a bowl.

Don't even get me started on all those scheduled stops the Bus has to make.

My money's on FireWire. Any cable with actual fire in it has to be faster.

a very good, but not perfect disk erasure tool that I use is called DBAN... derins boot and nuke.. there are many erasure types offered, and while some of the more secure types do take forever to complete, they do meet and exceed DOD standards for secure erasure of data, it is freeware and based in Linux... of course the only completely secure way of destroying the data to where it absolutely cannot be recovered is to disassemble the drive, remove the disks/platters inside, drill a few holes in them, and then grind down both sides of the disk/platter, barring that... if someone wants your data bad enough... ie law enforcement, uncle sam, or whoever... they can pretty much recover and reassemble anything you have EVER had on your hard drive... all it takes is a few high tech tools, an electron microscope, and some basic skills and knowledge, and time.

I use this product on all of the computers that I build for my community and families without a primary or secondary system for their kids, from the parts and components that I get from our Freecycling groups... and then give them back to the community and members for free.

No, just part of my campaign to not get any better at my job.

As a mac user, I must say that the USB ports on my powerbook are weak when it comes to supplying power. I have a external USB that works fine on one port with my work laptop, but when I use it on my mac, it requires both.

Lame, but still better than using a pc :D

Damon,

Thanx to your input I just tried one USB port and it works fine! So I think my above heat statement holds some truth.

Since I only have three USB ports, this knowledge could really help in the future. Thanx again!

...I make a meager living from computers, but the old saying "use what works" has always applied. Fast or slow, a backup of any sort or any device that that allows for file transfer, etc. is useful.

Hmmm...that 32 year Epiphone POS still sounds pretty good. No pre-amps, (Acoustic only) not very fancy, but it still works fine. I think I will go and pull it off the wall, you know, for a tune or ten.

If you need something temporary for testing SATA or PATA/IDE drives this works well. It comes with power supply and cables, so it's all you need. It works with hard, CDROM & DVD drives.
