By all accounts, the new album is killer. I'm planning to get it, also the new Jack Johnson and Bob Mould albums.

Let's see... I've seen them perform on TV twice in the last two-three weeks... once last week in a radio interview.... I believe they may have mentioned something about the new disc on their website... not to mention MySpace(yak)... Rolling Stone did a write-up on them and the new disc ... They hosted Sirius Satellite Radio's "Radio R.E.M"....

I don't know where they've gone. Not a clue. Complete Mystery.... They are Michael-'friggin'-Rockefeller

I don't know if I would call the new album "killer", but it is pretty good. Definately their best in while.

Low expectations yield similar results. Oingo Boingo was a MUCH better outfit, and they knew when to stop.

I'm not sure any R.E.M. album can be considered "killer" but I also can't think of a single tune by them that I don't like.

It's hard not to listen to some of the early hits and not tap your foot, and at the same time, a song like "Man On The Moon" makes me smile and cry at the same time, almost every time I hear it.

The one song by them that I can't find is their live cover of RT's "Wall of Death". It got some minor radio play (at least in the SF Bay Area) in the late 80's or early 90's, but I haven't seen any reference to it or found it anywhere. If anyone has any leads ...

I have an even better example. Try XTC. REM has about 6 good songs, but so does Joe Walsh. I love Joe, but he has a huge catalogue of bad songs, as does REM. As a buddy of mine said in junior high, they played their jams. And it wasn't that good to begin with. XTC would have been huge here if they'd toured more. Worth a listen. Yes, Miles, this means you...

I listened to the Skylarking album over the weekend and remembered how much I liked it back then. But it wasn't as good this past weekend as it was back in the day.

I'd give REM more than 6 good songs ... it's at least a couple of dozen.

I'll give XTC a listen again, but the first time I remember I remember that I didn't like or dislike them. As far as REM, I agree, several really good tunes, but nothing I'd turn off.

Now... Joe Walsh.. "Catalogue of Bad Songs"... not in my book. Each to his own I guess. For my money he's the only reason to own an Eagles album. I realize many do not agree. That's ok.

Joe Walsh is an inventive guy and a lot of fun, but when I heard he was joining the Eagles I didn't see the fit. It turned out OK, but IMO when Leadon and Meisner left, the Eagles became something else - a top notch band , but a different top notch band.

Bobbo,

You can find REM's cover of "Wall Of Death" on the RT Tribute album
entitled "Beat The Retreat".... good stuff.

Jeff W. beat me to the "Beat The Retreat" CD info! :D It's a studio version, not sure if there is a 'live' version out there. Great music on that CD.

R.E.M. was my favorite band for awhile, understand that "my favorite band" is a moving target...

I saw them three times over the years including once with Wilco opening for then at the Retama Polo grounds in San Antonio, TX.

Each show was quite good!

Our band used to play "Welcome Back to Rockville" right our of the Beatles "Rain"
(see the favorite Beatles song/album thread) both in the key of G, it's kind of fallen by the wayside as we work on new tunes. Maybe time to resurrect it for some of our upcoming summer gigs.

XTC: I was listening to "Nonsuch" last weekend, "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" in one of my favorites, I try to play it from the tab. And all week I find "...the smartest monkeys.." popping up in my head! "Black Sea" was always a favorite...
