Hi. I just got my Adamas yesterday. It is a beautiful guitar; sounds and plays great. I was wondering one thing : how do clean one (not that it needs it right now)? The fretboard is impregnated walnut if I remember correctly, so I don't know if the standard cleaning techniques work. And what about the top?

TIA,

Bradley

Hi Bradley,
Congratulations on your new Adamas. If this is your first, you'll be ruined for life. You might try doing a search on "Adamas fretboard clean" and read some of those threads. Beal recommended pledge and a golf towel.

Hey Bradley, what did you get? Pics required!

I just use a damp cloth to clean the top and bowl if needed. Usually just a dry cloth is all it takes to dust it off. The neck I use a regular guitar cleaning product. Dunlop 65 Polishing Cleaner is what I have currently. Anything without wax is ok. Wax will make the neck sticky when warmed by your hand, so I have learned not to wax the back of the neck. A slightly soapy towel would work but then follow it with a clean wet towel and then a dry towel so as to get all the soap off. Basically, I don't think you will hurt any of the surfaces of your guitar with any normal guitar cleaning products, but it won't need as much deep cleaning as other guitars.

You lucky dog! I was saddened to see Alison had to sell that guitar. Though my experience with Adamas limited, that particular guitar is the best sounding A I have ever played except for an original slothead. Two summers ago at Alison's jam weekend I kept going back to your guitar time after time, even though everybody had graciously put their excellent guitars out for everyone to play. Your guitar almost came home with me after that weekend.

Oh NO!... NOT the 1537!!!! ... I know that Adamas was worth it, but I guaranty you'll be searching out another 1537 in the future. There's just nothing else that can duplicate its sound. An Adamas texture-top and a 1537 are really the only guitars a person really needs... except for perhaps a classical, ...and a bass... and a solid body... and a 12-string. and if you are Beal, a Collins. ... and a dobro.

Which is; SADLY; why I sold my 1537. The only good thing about it is that I BLEW a bigger deal. In 1979 I met a girl in a bar who was selling an old guitar her father use to play before he died. She wanted $200. I went to look at it and found out it was a pre-war Martin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even called Martin to find out when it was made (1936). I STUPIDLY told her what it was instead of snatching it up! We only saw each other 1 more time after that. As Robin Williams once said "God gave man a brain and a penis and ONLY enough blood to use one at a time" :-(

The good news is that I kept my Ovation classical, my Ovation UK-II, and my Ovation bass. I had a Custom Legend but I gave it to a relative of my wife because she needed it and she has helped our family many many many times over. Also - it felt really good to see the look on her face when we gave it to her.

Oh, I forgot. I also sold my Glenn Campbell 12-string which I bought in 1973. It had a wonderful, unique sound but a few years ago I decided to try something else. I bought a Breedlove African Ebony 12-string. Yes - it does sound very good; not better or worse, just a different sound. I HATE the action on this guitar and actually sent it back to Breedlove to try and fix it. They said they did the best they could do but in NO way does it match my former Ovation 12-string.

Seems you did the right thing with the girl in the bar mate. I don't think I could have bought that from her, knowing that she didn't know what it was....and it was her dad's.....

Guilty. And it's still continuing to bring oohs and ahhs from everyone who sees or plays it.

Sure, rub it in :-(

I'm know I'm going to get the same with my new Adamas!

Jeje Arthur!!

Bradley, I use Fender polish and shine better the neck than Dunlop 65. The smell is better on Dunlop, but Fender give me better results. I use cotton to clean, the one the ladies use to clean her face after make up. I feel my guitars deserve it. An Adamas top deserves it.
